Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
Form Guide
The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either or / CD Course and distance winner; BF Beaten favourite; F Fell; B Brought down; P Pulled up; R Refused; S Slipped up; U Unseated rider; R Ran out.
The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.
FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK
Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front

RACE ONE
ESCAPEANDEVADE makes most appeal having his first start of the season. He won first time out last term at Ayr and although he was runner-up on his two subsequent starts, he ran with credit on both occasions. Parliament Hill was a disappointing favourite when third at Fontwell recently but is entitled to strip fitter this time around and looks a creditable alternative Dakota Moirette can be forgiven his last run of the season and a return to this trip should suit.
WIN: ESCAPEANDEVADE
RACE TWO
DANGER: Parliament Hill
SPARTAN ARMY looks an interesting addition to the Alan King yard having been picked up for 170,000 guineas since winning a Down Royal maiden for Joseph O’Brien. He’s sure to be well schooled for his hurdles debut for a trainer who excels in this sphere and could take some beating. Richard Hughes doesn’t have many runners on the NH circuit but he merits respect with Wholeofthemoon and Brian Hughes looks a positive jockey booking. Wakey Wakey shaped well at Sedgefield on debut and could build on that.
WIN: SPARTAN ARMY
RACE THREE
DANGER: Wholeofthemoon
Tango Boy stayed on to win over this C&D last month and is an obvious contender, but he has 4lb more from the handicap per and may have to give way to READYSTEADYBEAU on this occasion. Not beaten far over an inadequate trip in a better race at Ayr, he may improve considerably on just his second start over fences and he represents an in-form yard Breizh Alko is another to watch having won two chases, both under Brian Hughes who is reunited with him here.
WIN: READYSTEADYBEAU
RACE FOUR
DANGER: Tango Boy
American Sniper kept on well to win at Chepstow and is the only runner with winning form over hurdles, but he has to give 7lb to MAGIC WAVE and that could be a big ask. The selection got off the mark in an Ayr bump er, scoring by 13 lengths, and if he can jump then he may prove hard to beat Lightening Company would be an interesting alternative if he hurdles better than he did at Kelso in March
WIN: MAGIC WAVE
RACE FIVE
DANGER: American Sniper
Joke Dancer won this in 2020 and returns off a mark 8lb lower today. He could go well off bottom-weight, but a chance is taken on ADRIMEL He has won after a break in the past and scored twice at Haydock as a novice, before being outclassed at Cheltenham and Aintree. He should find this company more to his liking and may hold off Knickerbockerglory, who impressed at Ffos Las but lacks experience after only one start over fences.
WIN: ADRIMEL
RACE SIX
DANGER: Knickerbockerglory
LUNAR DISCOVERY justified strong support to win a similar race at Hexham on her debut in May and is fancied to go in again, despite carrying a 7lb penalty. Our Laura B has shown ability in three previous starts and is also considered, while Heavenly Clouds could be a newcomer to note for a yard that is more than capable of saddling winners in this sphere.
WIN: LUNAR DISCOVERY
DANGER: Our Laura B

It was another exciting day of racing here at Wetherby for the Peak Cap & Pearls Raceday on Saturday 12th October.
The day began with Moon Hunter comfortably besting the classy Hitching Jacking in what was an impressive performance in the opener. The Henry Daly trained five-year-old making it two wins on the bounce. He started well, keeping in touch with the leaders the whole way, smoothly taking second from 2 out before taking the lead just before the last in what ended up being an inspired ride from Tom O’Brien. Hitching Jacking ran well but proved no match for the victor running in second for Dan Skelton, while the big-priced Macavity clutched a surprise third. Notlongtillmay got her season off to a winning start, always doing enough to best the favourite, Moriko De Vassy. The L J Morgan trained six-year-old was prominent throughout thanks to an assured ride from Patrick Cowley. Moriko De Vassy struggled with his jumping early on but managed to pull it together, doing really well under the circumstances to clutch second. Zacony Rebel found no extra towards the finish and was only able to take third.
In the third race, Iroko got his season off to a flying start with the first win of his career. The market favourite on the day, it was a very strong performance. The four-year-old was prominent throughout before pushing on to challenge from three out, keeping on well to secure the victory. Foster’sisland, one of the outsiders of the race produced a shock to clutch second. It was a confident ride from Emma Smith-Chaston, the front two really pulling away from the rest of the pack. Jamie Snowden’s Hardy Du Seuil was solid but in the end was no match for the first two and could only take third.
The Fergal O’Brien trained Karl Philippe ridden on the day by Jack Hogan, produced the performance of the day in the fourth. The gelding was prominent throughout before being shaken up to dispute the lead three out. He
went clear from two out and just kept pushing clear to win, cosily. The experienced eight-year-old Zanza took second. He made a mess of the ninth fence, leaving himself with work to do and so despite a strong finish, didn’t have the pace to challenge the winner. The King Of May came in third after being hampered two out. The days favourite Soldier Of Destiny seemed to be having trouble with his jumping, unfortunately falling at the second after a particularly awkward jump.
It was a tad closer in the next when Throne Hall kept on well to notch his second victory in a row. It was an intelligent ride from Gavin Sheehan who did well to keep him in touch before pulling the trigger over the last to get the win. Matata battled well in second but found no extra at the end. With the third-placed Fruit N Nut weakening on the run-in.
The penultimate race saw another dominant performance. This time from Homme Public, securing Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero their second win of the day. He travelled strongly, switching right to push into the lead from two out. He soon went clear on the run in, keeping on well to win comfortably. Dan Skelton’s Too Friendly produced a solid run of his own under Bridget Andrews but found himself no match for the winner. The favourite, Risk D’Argent could only take third after running too freely early on.
The day ended with another excellent ride from Emma Smith-Chaston. Continuing from where she left off earlier, she went one better aboard the hefty priced (28/1) Grange Ranger here. It was an intelligent ride, holding up at the rear of the field before pushing on late to take the narrow victory. Light Flicker, prominent throughout was just held and finished in second. With the favourite Big Changes in third, unable to complete his hat-trick bid.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

RACE DESCRIPTION Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two mile novices hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two hurdle races.

IAN WARD
Head Groundsman - Wetherby Racecourse
Recipient of the OUR PEOPLE Racing Industry Recognition Award 2022
Ian Ward started working at Wetherby Racecourse as a school boy and was appointed Head Groundsman in 1983, and has recently commenced his 40th year in the role, which is an incredible achievement.
Ian's dedication to his role at Wetherby is quite outstanding; as a predominantly winter jumps course, Ian & his team have to work outside in the most inclement of weather, and as everyone knows, Wetherby can be particularly cold, wet and windy, even in summer!
Ian has also had to tackle some major challenges and adapt to change at Wetherby, most notable are the two separate compulsory orders of Racecourse land to widen the A1 & A1(M), which took sections off the bends on both occasions, which together with the assistance in planning and implementation of four new grandstands and the weighing room complex, and most recently the introduction of flat racing in 2015 has certainly kept him busy. We are delighted that Ian has been given this award in recognition of his dedication and lifetime service to Wetherby Racecourse & the Racing Industry.
ROA Northern Racing Awards
Peter Beaumont 1934 - 2020
Peter Beaumont was a Yorkshire Farmer-turned-Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer, winning Racing's most prestigious Steeplechase with Jodami in 1993.
Peter developed an early connection with horses through his family and pony club and then later through point to point racing. Once he took over the tenancy of Foulrice Farm in Brandsby in 1968, alongside his small dairy herd, he established hunter liveries and started bringing on young point to point horses, with great success. Sporting Luck was the first of several star horses to put his name on the map and as more horses arrived, and at the behest of owners, a trainers license was taken out in 1986.
Homebred horse, JJ Henry, was the first to make Peter's name under NH Rules, winning 6 Novice' Chases and 11 Chases in total, including the 1991 John Hughes Memorial Trophy (Now the Topham Trophy) at Aintree.
Peter soon became known for sourcing and training a wonderful stamp of staying chaser. The best of these being 1993 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Jodami, a horse who also won three successive Irish Gold Cups. There were winners of other illustrious races such as Young Kenny (Scottish Grand National), & Hussard Collonges (RSA Chase), along with lovely chasers such as Island Chief, Niki Dee & Bobby Grant to name but a few.
Above all, Peter was truly the kindest of men, decent, modest & mindful of others. He was a true gentleman, who always made time for everyone and who was much loved by his family and friends and is missed by all.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty usually 7lb

HORSE WELFARE
Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.
During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.
It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles. Leading
