Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
Form Guide
The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either or / CD Course and distance winner; BF Beaten favourite; F Fell; B Brought down; P Pulled up; R Refused; S Slipped up; U Unseated rider; R Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.
Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front
You must be 18 or over to place a bet
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

It was another exciting day of racing here at Wetherby in the season opener, on Wednesday 12th October.
The opener was won by the Donald McCain-trained Collingham, with the four-year-old doing well to fend off late pressure from the veteran Fransham. He took a keen hold early on, keeping touch with the leading pack but wasn’t jumping particularly fluently. Jockey Theo Gillard did well, taking the lead towards the finish. Fransham rallied late on but was unable to close the distance while the favourite, Sonning found no extra late on.
The short-priced favourite El Borracho justified his strong market support when scoring in the second race of the day, a three-runner handicap steeple chase. It was a tight contest with El Borracho leading most of the way, though the gelding’s jumping wasn’t the most consistent Sue Smith’s Joke Dancer pressed well throughout the race but ultimately found no extra on the run-in Texard led entering the final circuit but soon found himself outpaced. It was a good victory, but maybe not as convincing as the market had suggested.
The excellent Donald McCain and Brian Hughes combination shone again in the third of the day with a dominant victory from the three-year-old Vintage Valley. It was a fine ride from Brian Hughes, keeping the gelding with the pack before storming clear 3 out, pushing further clear in the run-in, in what ended up being a comfortable win. The clear market favourite on the day (5/6), Highland Frolic was looking mightily impressive until jumping awkwardly 3 out, leaving him with no chance of challenging for the lead but was still able to take second with the big-priced Robin Goodfellow clutching third.
Jockey Adam Wedge produced a fine performance aboard the veteran Tardree in the Bobby Renton Handicap Chase. It was a smart ride, keeping the gelding in a strong position and jumping well before challenging
the leader over the last, soon flying clear Whoshotthesheriff came in second after some unconvincing jumping. The favourite, Saint Arvans was running well, leading two out before falling at the last.
The fifth was a five-runner handicap and a bit of a messy race with the leading trio weakening late on to be caught by the rear pair. The favourite Caius Marcius was the victor in the end after racing at the back of the field most of the running, Brian Hughes then kicked him into gear making headway. Shaken up just before two out before taking the lead in the run in. Hillview matched the eleven-year-olds run but found no extra late on and had to make do with second while Snookered was outpaced in third.
The penultimate race of the day ended up much closer than the market suggested. The well-backed favourite, Not What It Seems may have got the win, though Micky Hammond’s gelding was made to work for it. He led for most of the going and was hard pressed from two out but in the end just did enough to keep his place, despite the best efforts of the second placed Ballyporeen. Rebecca Menzies’ gelding ran very well pressing the leader all the way but just couldn’t manage to find enough to score the victory. The rest of the field was no match for the leading pair.
The days racing was then concluded in a two-runner race which may have looked competitive on paper but ended up being anything but. Micky Hammond scoring his second victory of the day as his seven-year-old gelding Mac Suibhne scored an easy victory. He made a mess of the fourth fence, but from then on he was cruising, going clear two out. The market clearly favoured his rival more, but Big Changes was unable to notch a second victory on the day for trainer L J Morgan. The five-year-olds jumping was not fluent and he was struggling to keep pace with the leader and found no extra from the last.

RACE ONE
Ange Endormi arguably sets the standard of those who have run in a handicap, but there are a couple of interesting debutants who have now received a mark. Algesiras ran with credit when last seen finishing third at Market Rasen in December and is likely to prove more competitive now up in trip However, PIAFF BUBBLES makes slightly more appeal with the benefit of a recent run, and has shaped with more promise in his completed starts over hurdles.
WIN: PIAFF BUBBLES DANGER: Algesiras
RACE TWO
Loughderg Rocco is an interesting recruit to fences but he faces a stiff task given what his rivals achieved over hurdles. There was a lot to like about Press Your Luck’s win on his first attempt over fences at Chepstow and that experience should stand him in good stead. However, he may struggle to concede 10lb to GELINO BELLO, who was last seen winning the Grade 1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle and he rates an exciting prospect.
WIN: GELINO BELLO DANGER: Press Your Luck
RACE THREE
NAME IN LIGHTS has proved a different proposition since being fitted with the tongue-tie, winning with ease on his last two starts, and he will prove difficult to beat if ready to roll on his seasonal/handicap debut. Parisencore was last seen finishing second at Bangor in May and a 2lb rise shouldn’t prevent the Nicky Richards inmate from remaining compet itive, with Market Rasen winner Rory And Me another to consider now entering handicaps for the first time.
WIN: NAME IN LIGHTS DANGER: Parisencore
RACE FOUR
Medyaf made a winning start to his hurdling career when scoring at Stratford earlier this month. He was slightly in front when left clear at the final obstacle, but marginal preference is for TUDDENHAM GREEN Alan King’s charge came back from a short break to score over this trip at Chepstow on his hurdling debut earlier in the month and can make his presence felt once more, while Mr Freedom should also be considered.
WIN: TUDDENHAM GREEN DANGER: Medyaf RACE FIVE
FLIC OU VOYOU recorded an emphatic victory on his return to action earlier this month and looks set to have another progressive season ahead of him. Paul Nicholls’ charge finished a respectable second in Listed company in March and looks more than capable of getting involved at this level. Into Overdrive makes his return to action following a series of consistent runs last season and is feared most, ahead of Coconut Splash.
WIN: FLIC OU VOYOU DANGER: Into Overdrive
RACE SIX
JAR DU DESERT, whose dam is a half-sister to a Grade 1 hurdles winner in France, appeals on pedigree and could be worth chancing on debut. Ygritte is a half-sister to a couple of winners in this discipline and the Dan Skelton-trained three-year-old is respected receiving 7lb off the boys. Solomoon runs for the same stable and has to be feared, while Obsessedwithyou also has the potential advantage of the sex allowance and is another to monitor in the betting market.
WIN: JAR DU DESERT DANGER: Ygritte
RACE SEVEN
There was a lot to like about the dominant display posted by UKANTANGO on his hurdles bow at Aintree in May and he is taken to pick up where he left off, despite having to shoulder a penalty. Don Hollow is an intriguing runner from the Dan Skelton yard as he showed tenacity to win a bumper here in February. He’s one to bear in mind now he tackles the next stage of his development. Burrows Hall looks the pick of Sue Smith’s pair of intended runners and also warrants a betting check.
WIN: UKANTANGO DANGER: Don Hollow

I jumped at the chance when I was given a last-minute opportunity to do it again.

The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. JUVENILE HURDLE
Just the four go to post for this year’s renewal of the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle, a Listed contest which was won 12 months ago by Porticello, who finished runner-up in the Summit Juvenile Hurdle on his next outing, before winning Chepstow’s Grade 1 Finale Juvenile Hurdle over Christmas. 2020 winner Duffle Coat won the Grade 2 at Cheltenham’s November meeting on his next start, whilst 2019 winner Langer Dan has since developed into a very smart hurdler, winning the 2021 Imperial Cup and was last seen winning another valuable handicap at Aintree’s Grand National fixture.
Whether any of this year’s quartet will be up to that kind of level of performance remains to be seen, but the obvious place to start is with recent course-and-distance winner Vintage Valley, who represents Donald McCain and Brian Hughes. The grey raced three times on the Flat for recent Amazon Prime star Andrew Balding reaching a rating of 65 and after a disappointing start over hurdles at Sedgefield, took a big step forward to beat a superior Flat horse at this venue. He sported cheek-pieces on that occasion, which have today been replaced by blinkers, and he will likely bid to make all of the running. Incidentally, that documentary I touched upon named Horsepower is most definitely worth a watch.
Back to matters in hand and the highest rated of the four runners on the level was the Alan King-trained Tuddenham Green, who carries the silks of leading owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede. Rated 70 on the Flat, despite failing to win in five starts, the Nathaniel gelding made a successful hurdles debut at Chepstow earlier in the month, where he stayed well and appeared to be doing his best work inside the final quarter-mile. The runner-up was beaten at short odds next time and it is likely that more is required here, but he is clearly open to plenty of improvement as a hurdler, after just that one run.
Another who is unbeaten in one start over hurdles is Dan Skelton’s Medyaf, who was upsides La Breille when she came down at the final flight at Stratford. Formerly trained by John and Thady Gosden, he was another maiden on the Flat, reaching an official BHA Rating of 67 after four starts. By Sea The Moon, he was picked up for just 9,000gns in February and is sure to appreciate the likely strong pace that Vintage Valley will set.
And, finally, Mr Freedom, who is the most experienced runner in the field, having already had the four starts over hurdles. Only rated 53 on the level (the lowest of the four), he finished third on debut at Fontwell during August, but subsequently won three times during September, seemingly improving with every run. The Sixties Icon gelding clearly likes good ground and put up a career-best last time, when drawing right away to win by 10 lengths, whilst conceding 12lbs and more to the opposition. Sheena West’s runner likes to be held up, so expect him to be played late and although this represents another step up the ladder, he has already been given a mark of 120 over hurdles, so sets the standard.

The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part.
