LAST TIME OUT | Tuesday 22nd March We last came together on Tuesday 22nd March for an afternooon comprising of eight races.

A usually competitive Conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle which consisted of nine runners. in the race we had a well supported favourie in the shape of Hungry Tiger, although the money was ever so slightly misplaced as the George Bewley gelding could only finish second. Lleyton was the impressive winner of the race jumping well under a patient Theo Gillard ride, shooting clear of the feild approaching the last flight at a huge price of 18-1.

The second race of the afternoon, a novices’ Hurdle, saw 5/2 shot Reilly finish four and a quarter lengths ahead of his nearest rival, 10-11 Favourite Learnalot, Himself slightly underwhellming not jumping with great fluency in the race and the six-year-old seemed to hang left when coming under pressure. Old Painless found himself filling the third spot with the recently returning Daryl Jacob who it is great to see back riding at the track.

The inform team of Harry Bannister and Richard Bandy managed to finish victourious in the best finish of the day. Bannister’s mount Ecume Atlantique, made the running throughgout the contest and battled hard to finish a nose infront of Frimeur De Lancray who could quite get up despite the 9lb he was recieving from the winner.

The fourth race of the afternoon saw Dan and Harry Skelton denied their second winner of the meeting, with 9-2 shot One For Billy. However it was the Charlie Hammond and Nick kent team, who have enjoyed plenty of success over the years that walked away victors today. The nine year old gelding who relished the step back down in trip to the minimum two miles, Virtually making under all under a perfect front running ride Sayar managed to hold

of all challengers, Sayars’ jumping throughout the contest was impecible. One For Billy put up a bold effort in second and it was a step back in the right direction for a horse who hasnt won for a long time the Ex-Skelton trained Antunes trailed back in third.

The Feature race of the day. Charlie Longsdon enjoyed a popular winner in the shape of Castle Robin; a Novice handicap chase. The 11/8 favourite with Paul O’brien in the saddle, saw off Jack Quinlan and Fern Hill by one and a quater lengths. What was set to be a competitive three runner race was somewhat lessened by the under porformance of Grand Mogul who finnished just under fifty lengths behind the front two.

A father son combination won our sixth race of the day. the Jonjo O’neil trained Manintheshadows cruised to victory under the trainers son, Not Jonjo Jr but younger brother AJ. Manintheshadows made a lot of the running throughout the contest and began to pull further and further clear as a result of the pack begining to close approaching two out, Resulting in an empathic eleven length success over Ribeye in second and Storm Force One the 100-30 favourite who was left trailing in third.

The penultimate race was won by Micky Hammond with the Middleham trainer sending out the bottom weight Great Raffles to win at 10-1, Beating the well fancied R Bernard who was ridden by the talented conditional Charlie Todd. The favourite Malinas Island who was 11-8 could only manage to finish a well beaten fourth.

The final race of the day saw the odds on favourite win the Bumper. Chasing Fire trained by Olly Murphy impressed on his first start and maintained his unbeaten record,Imperial Merlin was second for john quinn.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

RACE ONE The unexposed PATAGONIA has displayed some promise in both of his previous starts and it would be no surprise to see him go well on his handicap debut this afternoon. Spiritofthenorth won on the Flat recently and his form over hurdles suggests that he could make the frame, while Rory And Me and Scudamore are the pick of the remaining field.

WEEBILL won twice in claiming/selling company at Leicester prior to finishing second at Catterick three weeks ago and Olly Murphy’s veteran clearly sets the standard in this contest. Clearance is arguably his main danger based on his third-placed finish at Market Rasen when last seen over hurdles in August. Dis Donc edges out Instant Replay to be best of the rest.

RACE THREE ROSE SEA HAS had been running well in defeat prior to winning at Fontwell a couple of weeks ago and a 3lb rise should not stop him from being very competitive once again this afternoon.

RACE FOUR GLENCASSLEY held every chance when falling at the last on his most recent outing at Ludlow and the seven-year-old, whose last success came here in October, makes considerable appeal with the handicapper having left him on the same mark. Jet Of Magic scored on his handicap bow at Doncaster and is expected to be competitive off a 4lb higher mark, while the drop in grade could see Jet Plane enter calculations.

RACE FIVE ROOKIE TRAINER is yet to trouble the judge in two outings over fences, but the application of first-time cheekpieces might see the required improvement from Neil Mulholland’s gelding. Templebredin is an interesting contender on his first start for Dr Richard Newland, having run in hunter chases in Ireland last year, and he is capable of a decent showing along with Lord Sparky..

RACE SIX Celtic Tara has done her mark no favours in defeat of late and might struggle giving 6lb, before Lilly Pinchin’s 5lb claim in the saddle, to FREETHINKER. Charlie Longsdon’s charge has won his last two starts under this rider at Newcastle and might have more to offer after just nine starts over hurdles. Onestepatatime finished a close-up second on her handicap debut at Sedgefield latest and is another to take seriously.

RACE SEVEN WORLD TRIP was impressive when scoring on her latest outing at Huntingdon and, although that came on soft ground, these better forecast underfoot conditions should hold few problems for Olly Murphy’s inmate judged on her success last year at Perth. She is up 5lb in the weights and is taken to see off the challenge of fellow Huntingdon scorer King Ferdinand and Hexham runner-up Fame And Hope.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.

During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
