Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity (YBTC) are working to make these numbers smaller, by raising funds to support dedicated research projects into treating and curing child and adult brain tumours.

LAST TIME OUT | Monday 7th March We last came together on Monday 7th March for an afternooon comprising of seven races, with Harry and Dan Skelton completing a double on the day in races four and seven.

A relatively competitive group of ten went to post for the first race of the afternoon; a mares’ maiden hurdle, headed by 8/15 favourite Our Bills Aunt for Alex Hales. The six-year-old was disappointing, finishing nine and three-quarter lengths behind the leading trio, headed by the Micky Hammondtrained Shighness with Billy Garrity in the saddle. The five-year-old stayed on to win by a neck from the Samuel Drinkwater-trained Jen’s Georgie, following a desire to hang to the right in the closing stages.

The second race of the afternoon, a novices’ handicap chase, saw 9/4 favourite Broomfields Kan finish two and three-quarter lengths behind the winner in fourth position, and the seven-year-old seemed to tire quickly and relenquished third up the run-in. The Alison Hamilton-trained Choix Des Armes won stylishly following a string of temperemental runs, and it was commented that he improved following the drop down in trip and slower ground on this occasion.

It was a race for the favourite in the third of the afternoon; well-backed Netywell claimed victory by five and a half lengths from Brian Hughes and Cartonne, following an extension of his lead after jumping three from home. Cartonne stayed on well enough to claim second from Ritson and Conor O’Farrell, whose jumping lacked fluency and weakened significantly up the run-in.

The fourth race of the afternoon secured Dan and Harry Skelton’s first victory of the meeting with 4/1 shot Playful Saint. The seven-year-old stayed on to win by a shoulder from the Mick and David

Easterby-trained Albert’s Back and Brian Hughes, despite tiring up the run-in. A post-race examination revealed that the gelding finished with a wound to his right fore fetlock, so stayed on impressively to win this. Elsewhere on the card, 11/4 favourite Fontana Ellissi performed disappointingly and finished six and a half lengths behind the winner, after displaying no extra up the run-in.

Mark Walford enjoyed a popular winner in the fifth race of the afternoon; a handicap chase. He saddled 2/1 favourite Buster Valentine with Jamie Hamilton in the saddle, and the paur saw off Indian Brave and Sean Bowen by two lengths and a quarter of a furlong. Denying Harry and Dan Skelton of a triple on the day was seven-year-old Seven No Trumps, finishing three lengths and half a furlong behind Buster Valentine in third, having additionally lost second to Indian Brave up the run-in.

Lewis Stones and Sam England partnered to win the penultimate race, a handicap chase, with nine-year-old Magic Of Milan. The mare won by a length and a quarter, staying on well and overtaking 6/4 favourite Motown Lake, who finished in fourth.

Espoir Moriviere ran a good race to claim second and stayed on well up the run-in, despite proving no match for the winner.

The final race of the day saw only three runners go to post, but provided Dan and Harry Skelton with a double on the day with Grey Dawning. Despite racing in last, the five-year-old quickened up beautifully to come to the front 3 from the finish, before soon going clear and winning impressively from Saint Patric and Charlotte Jones.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

RACE ONE

Now that the penny has dropped for HUNGRY TIGER after an easy win at Newcastle last month, there is likely to be plenty more improvement forthcoming from the eight-year-old, despite a 7lb rise. With the Rebecca Menzies stable in stellar form, Mahanakhon Power could provide the biggest threat to the selection, along with Silkstone, who is still finding his way in this sphere. Lleyton and Summer Lightening are not without claims either.

RACE TWO

Proven stamina could be the order of the day here and GREDIN is one such gelding who is proven over much further. A winner on debut at Carlisle last October, things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Donald McCain’s charge since, but this represents an ideal opportunity to regain the winning thread. Reilly is a big player based on the pick of his early-season form, whereas, Amber Gold ran with credit when third here recently. Irish point-to-point winner Old Painless could also have a say.

DESTIN D’AJONC won with a lot more in hand than the winning margin of three lengths suggested at Chepstow and as long as he handles the drier conditions here, the son of Martaline can follow up. With a 7lb rise for that success being offset by Jamie Brace’s 7lb claim, the nine-year-old can see off the attentions of Dr Sanderson, who looked to be in the grip of the handicapper when beaten into third at Sedgefield.

Zalvados was an eye-catcher at Hereford last month and is now 1lb below his last winning mark.

RACE FOUR

Antunes bounced back to form over fences last time out and the eight-year-old demands the utmost respect reverting to the smaller obstacles. He may, however, be bumping into a dangerous rival in the form of the unexposed BUCEPHALUS, who has been knocking on the door in his two outings over obstacles. The gelding is rated 79 on the Flat and may be able to continue his upwards curve today, while One For Billy completes the shortlist.

RACE FIVE

CASTLE ROBIN brushed aside his two rivals with consummate ease last time out at Doncaster and a 2lb rise may not be enough to stop the consistent seven-year-old from repeating that feat. Although Grand Mogul failed to fire last time out, the unexposed gelding demands plenty of respect based on his emphatic win on his chase debut. Uncle Alastair has been a model of consistency over the larger obstacles and merits consideration.

RACE SIX

In this competitive contest marginal preference goes to MANINTHESHADOWS despite him unseating last time out. The Jonjo O’Neill-trained gelding readily dismissed his rivals at Doncaster on his penultimate outing and he may be able to repeat that feat with a similar performance. Rapaport was by no means disgraced on his latest outing at Huntingdon and he demands plenty of respect, while Shot Boii warrants consideration.

RACE SEVEN

Malinas Island will no doubt prove popular judged on his recent form and because he’s the sole C&D winner in the field, but TRAIN HILL (was also engaged to run at Southwell yesterday) gets the nod. He has been freshened up since a couple of second-placed efforts last August/September over fences and hurdles, and is very interesting given he’s completely unexposed over the trip and stayed on well into second at Uttoxeter last time over the extended 2m7f. Great Raffles is also of some interest.

RACE EIGHT

This is potentially a red-hot bumper, won last year by Hillcrest who was sent off favourite for the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham last week. Ramming Speed and Imperial Merlin are two interesting newcomers, but preference is for experience and LARGY TRAIN, who won really impressively first time up at Ayr for Stuart Crawford and has since joined Paul Nicholls. Impressive point-to-point winner Chasing Fire and Hitching Jacking, second in that sphere last November, are others to note.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.

During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
