LAST TIME OUT | Friday 7th January We last came together for our first meeting of the year on Friday 7th January, with six races taking place over the afternoon. There was a mixed bag of results throughout the day, with a mixture of short-priced horses claiming victory as well as the odd outsider.

The first race of the day was claimed by 16/1 shot Bonne Vitesse for Emma Smith-Chaston with Micky Hammond in the saddle. Despite the pair being held up behind the leaders in the opening stages, they went clear with Tommaso and Thomas Dowson around the home turn but left the Philip Kirby-trained gelding well back when clearing the last. Bone Vitesse was pushed out and won easily, and in splendid style, by 17 lengths from Tommaso, with 5/4F Kayfast Warrior finishing a tired 19 and-a-quarter lengths behind the winner. Just over 43 lengths split the difference between first and last.

Eight runners went to post for the second race, a handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards.

Market leader Readysteadybeau for Lucinda Russell went off an exceptionally short price at 10/11, following an excellent win at Haydock a month earlier. Nonetheless, it was not meant to be at this meeting, as the Dr. Richard Newlandtrained Foillan proclaimed over the Russell runner, winning comfortably by two lengths following Hammond’s asks for more.

Guetapan Collonges sought to claim his first victory of the season for J.P. McManus and connections, following respectable fifth and third place runs at Stratford and Uttoxeter earlier in the season. The 11/4 shot did not disappoint

and was a very popular winner of this handicap chase, where he sealed the race by an impessive 14 lengths; again denying Lucinda Russell her first win of the day with Caboy. 6/4F Geryville was never really in touch with the leaders and was pulled up following the 14th obstacle; a post-race examination revealed that the gelding had mucus in his larynx.

It was the turn of 7/4 market leader Global Agreement in the fourth race, claiming his second win of the season whilst giving Milton Harris another win to add to his rapidly growing portfolio. The five-year-old just edged out the David Pipe-trained Morgenstern into second by a length and, despite not jumping the last fluenty, Global Agreement stayed on strongly and was always in front towards the finish.

Jonjo O’Neill saddled his first winner of the meeting in the sixth race, a handicap chase for five-year-olds and upwards, with his son Jonjo O’Neill Jr. in the saddle. The horse in question was seven-year-old File Illico, who began racing midfield before being asked for more three from the finish. Despite a mistake two from home and being three lengths down going towards the last, the pair stayed on well to beat 11/4F Relkadam by half-a-length past the post.

Rebecca Menzies and Brian Hughes ended the day on a high, winning the Bumper by a mighty seven and-a-half lengths with Bolton, leaving popular choice Burrow Seven in second. The four-year-old, despite being held up behind leaders, quickened up beautifully over two furlongs out, and was soon pushed clear to win.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /.

RACE ONE

OUR JET can be forgiven his recent effort when he finished fourth at Warwick last month after he lost a shoe. The six-year-old gelding now returns from wind surgery and he could have more to offer dropping back to this shorter trip. Cartonne was too free when he finished seventh on hurdles debut at Catterick and he could find improvement now fitted with a first-time hood, while Snowy Clouds and Thunder In Milan can also figure.

RACE TWO

Cases can be made for a few of these but the casting vote goes to ESCAPEANDEVADE, who seemed to have plenty in hand when scoring on his hurdles debut at Ayr earlier this month, and the son of Westerner can a defy 7lb penalty here. This appears to be a tougher test for Bold Endeavour but he remains undefeated and commands respect on his return from a short break, while Forpaddytheplumber and Raffle Ticket are also considered.

RACE THREE

This step up in trip can suit CONCEROE, who was a game performer when holding all his rivals to score at Fakenham last month. The six-year-old gelding could be open to improvement on his handicap debut.

You Some Boy seeks the hat-trick after his latest C&D success and he appears to be the main danger to the selection, while Flexi Furlough has been holding his form well with a string of placed efforts and he completes the shortlist.

RACE FOUR

It’s not easy to look past course specialist FRANSHAM, who had jumped well and had still to be asked for an effort until unseating four out over C&D last month (Cornerstone Lad well beaten). Prior to that, Pam Sly’s gelding had travelled strongly to open his chase account from a 3lb lower mark and his current rating remains there to be exploited at his favourite venue. Experienced campaigners Hollywoodien and Destined To Shine each shaped with encouragement after lengthy layoffs last month and could prove most troublesome.

RACE FIVE

Credible cases can be made for experienced C&D winner Haafapiece, as well as Benson, who hasn’t been disgraced in some deeper handicaps recently, and likeable dual-purpose performer Solo Saxophone, who wasn’t beaten far over C&D last time out. For all that, Ann Duffield’s recent Irish import GLENTRUAN stepped up on all known form to dead-heat with the progressive Foster’sisland over a slightly longer trip at Ayr last month and a 5lb rise may not be enough to anchor him with improvement in the tank.

RACE SIX

MOROZOV COCKTAIL pulled well clear with the runner-up when scoring over course and distance on his latest start and the six-year-old is fancied to follow up. Glittering Love showed a good attitude when winning at Carlisle in first-time blinkers last month and looks set for another bold show, while Raddle And Hum was closing with every stride when third under these conditions last time and may also feature.

RACE SEVEN

The Fergal O’Brien-trained KALELULA is related to multiple winners and the daughter of Kalanisi may have what it takes to get off the mark at the first attempt. Belleloise shaped with promise on her debut at Newcastle last month and can give the selection most to do, while Roc Of Dundee performed well in a point at Turtulla when last seen and could also prove competitive on her debut for Donald McCain.

RACE DESCRIPTION The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles, three and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.

During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
