RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two mile and three-and-a-half furlongs novices’ limited handicap race for novice four-year-olds and upwards. This is a two miles and two-and-a-half furlongs limited handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

B g Court Cave (IRE) - Regal Holly Owner: Mr Ian Hamilton Breeder: B. Walsh Jockey: Brian Hughes Trainer: Ann Hamilton, Newcastle Upon Tyne Sponsor: I & A Hamilton

TIMEFORM VIEW Useful hurdler and quickly even better over fences, finishing alone here in October and didn’t need to be at his best to land 4-runner handicap at Newcastle (20f). Looks a big player again. Star RatingHHHHI BHA 141 2 MIDNIGHT RIVER (GB) (23) 141F-F0 D

Ch g Midnight Legend - Well Connected Jockey: Harry Skelton Owner: Mr Frank McAleavy Trainer: Dan Skelton, Alcester Breeder: Swanbridge Bloodstock Limited Sponsor: Ladbrokes, The Air Ambulance Service (Warwickshire & Northamptonshire)

TIMEFORM VIEW Useful 3-time novice hurdle winner last term. Jumping fell apart on his Carlisle chase debut/return and didn’t show a great deal back hurdling at Aintree, either. Mark has eased at least. Star RatingHHHII BHA 135 3 CHINWAG (GB) (40) 1316-21 D

B g Trans Island - Clohamon Gossip (IRE) Jockey: Sean Quinlan Owner: The Boot Inn Partnership Trainer: Neil Mulholland, Limpley Stoke Breeder: T. C. Dawson Sponsor: Bet UK / Game Tech Marketing Limited

TIMEFORM VIEW Largely progressive over hurdles and confirmed chase debut promise when landing 11-runner Ffos Las handicap (19.4f) in November. Got the job done in good style then and likely more to come. Star RatingHHHHH BHA 128 4 ERNE RIVER (IRE) (233) 321/31-1 D

Jockey: Charlie Hammond Owner: Crossed Fingers Partnership Trainer: Nick Kent, Brigg Breeder: Mary Fitzpatrick and Brendan Fitzpatrick Sponsor: Lincolnshire Tyre Ltd.

TIMEFORM VIEW Point winner who made all on second start at Doncaster in March and looked very professional when landing the odds 2 months later. Hopes are high he will take well to fences. Handicap debut. Star RatingHHHII BHA 127 5 HIDEO (FR) (50) 233-30P

TIMEFORM VIEW Fairly useful maiden over hurdles/fences in France. Well held tackling extended 2 1/2m on final start in November and probably best watched having joined new yard for €10,000 subsequently. Star RatingHHIII BHA 117

PLAY SMARTER

An interesting small-field contest with the vote in favour of CHINWAG. He confirmed his chase debut promise when running out a good winner over this sort of trip at Ffos Las in November and a 4lb higher mark looks more than workable. Pay The Piper made the most of a good opportunity at Newcastle latest and should be thereabouts, whilst Erne River is an intriguing chase debutant.
