Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

GOLDEN ROBIN attracted market support when third over course and distance on her latest start, finishing behind a couple of progressive types, and the seven-year-old makes the most compelling case in a race where a number of her rivals have questions to answer. Top And Drop returns from a break and looks capable of making an impact off a mark of 115, while Whatsdastory has the blinkers on this time and is another to consider.

The Alan King-trained HARBOUR LAKE made the perfect start to his career when winning readily at this track in October, justifying notable market support in the process, and improvement may not be required in order for him to maintain his unbeatenrecord.Fellowfive-year-oldLakotaWarriorisanothertocarryapenaltyafteralast-time-outcoursewinandshould make a bold bid, while Rory And Me looked in need of the run at Newcastle earlier this month and cannot be discounted.

ERNE RIVER boasted a progressive profile over hurdles, justifying favouritism with the minimum of fuss at Warwick when last seen in May, despite shouldering a 6lb penalty. The switch to fences may open up further improvement for the gelded son of Califet and he can prove too strong for Chinwag, who was always going well when scoring at Ffos Las on his latest start. Pay The Piper is seeking his third win at this course and is also worthy of consideration.

RACE FOUR

MONSIEUR POM POM displayed plenty of promise when finishing second on his racecourse debut at Catterick a couple of weeks ago and he could be hard to beat today with the benefit of that experience under his belt. Thunder Ahead won over 1m4f on the Flat and he has to be of some interesting on his hurdling bow, while similar comments apply to Lifetime Legend.

CHEDDLETON was far from disgraced when finishing second at Cheltenham last time and the six-year-old could go one better today off the same mark. Nuts Well is an obvious threat to the selection having finished fifth in a competitive renewal of the Old Roan at Aintree when last seen. Others who merit a place on the shortlist are Fransham and Eclair D’Ainay.

RACE SIX

You Some Boy did the job well at Newcastle last time but is unproven over this trip, unlike HIGH GROUNDS. Ryan Potter’s gelding improved markedly for the step up to an extended 2m7f on soft ground at Market Rasen earlier this month and though the handicapper has hit him with a 13lb hike, he may still have enough improvement in him over this trip to score here. Thundersockssundae has done little wrong in two starts this term and could be a factor, while Uttoxeter second Oliver’s Island and Hexham winner Atomic Angel also have claims.

RACE SEVEN

BASFORD stayed on strongly to land the spoils at Carlisle last time and with similar underfoot conditions forecast here, Jennie Candlish’s charge could defy a penalty to score. Fringill Dike is the other previous winner in the race but Jedd O’Keeffe’s runner encounters softer conditions here, while Sporting Ace came out worst in a blanket finish between five horses at Newbury on debut but could have plenty to offer with that run under his belt. Dan Skelton’s Grey Dawning and the Sue Smith-trained Copper Beach look the pick of the newcomers.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three mile handicap steeple chase race for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 120.
