LAST TIME OUT | Saturday 4th December We last came together on Saturday 4th December for an exciting afternoon of jumps racing, ahead of the Christmas racedays this weekend. Seven races took place, delivering interesting results across the board for leading trainers and jockeys.

The first race of the day was claimed by the Henry Daly trained Hillcrest, ridden by Richard Patrick in the green and yellow quarters of the Late Trevor Hemmings. He won very impressively by 20 lengths from Grand Du Nord and Billy Garritty who, despite being shaken up three from the finish, never posed a threat and Hillcrest won easily.

The second race of the meeting saw 7/2F Little Orange race prominently and chased the leader following the eigth fence; he had every chance in the closing stages but fell two from the finish.

This left Sean Quinlan aboard Ladronne in the lead and, despite being hampered by Little Orange, kept on well to win by 13 lengths from the Tim Easterby trained Mill Race King and Jamie Hamilton.

Bean In Trouble triumphed in the third race of the afternoon, despite being held up in behind leaders in the opening stages. The market leader was ridden and hung on well with William Kennedy in the saddle to win by a length from Flexi Furlough and Tom Midgeley, who kept on well to snatch second from the Nicky Henderson trained Go Chique.

4/5F Saint Palais was a popular winner of the fourth race and gave Sean Quinlan his second win of the afternoon, this time for trainer Richard

Bandey. The four year old won comfortably by three-and-three-quarter lengths and stayed on well in the final stages.

The ‘Cheers Jacko’ handicap hurdle saw Olly Murphy saddle his first winner of the day with No Risk Des Flos and Fergus Gregory in the saddle.

The 11 year old Drumconnor Lad ran an excellent race to finish second by a neck and led the field three from home. He was certainly unlucky to meet No RIsk Des Flos, who just edged him out in the closing stages. 15/8F Haafapiece and Jack Andrews finished third, one-and-three-quarter lengths behind the first two. He was held up in the opening stages and didn’t jump fluently over the final flight, before failing to deliver anything more inside the final 110 yards.

The penultimate race on the card was claimed by Charlie Hammond aboard Sidi Isamel for David Pipe. The seven year old won by four-and-a-half lengths and jumped fluently throughout, despite taking a keen hold in the opening stages. He went well clear approaching the final flight and wasn’t in danger in the final stages. Geryville and Alain Cawley ran a good race to finish second and had a chance three from home, but this was snatched away when the pair weren’t fluent over the second flight from home.

The final race of the afternoon was a nail-biting contest that was claimed again by Richard Patrick aboard Fortuitous Favour for Anthony Honeyball. The pair just denied 2/1F Bounce Back and Archie Watson from top honours; despite running green, Patrick niggled him to stay on and won by a head past the post.

RACE ONE

Having improved to make all at Hexham on his stable debut, KAPHUMOR ran another fine race from a 10lb higher mark when just outstayed over 3m3f at Sedgefield. There should be much more to come and a further 3lb rise may not be insurmountable. Winning pointer Croagh Patrick has shown enough in both chase starts to suggest there is a prize in him off his current figure, while winning hurdler Anightinlambourn is very much respected from a falling rating on her chasing bow.

RACE TWO

Sashenka sets the standard but appeared to take a step backwards in an admittedly tough handicap at Cheltenham. She is worth taking on with GALIA DES LITEAUX, who looks a likely type for Dan Skelton, having joined the yard for 70,000 pounds following a decisive win in an Irish point. Just Jess proved a revelation after wind surgery when winning easily at Hexham, but she looks vulnerable under a penalty in a better race.

RACE THREE

TWOTWOTHREE turned in a career-best performance when landing this 12 months ago and returned to action last month when putting in a satisfactory spin over hurdles at Bangor. He has more to do this time but soft ground is ideal and he could take some stopping, though Schiehallion Munro also goes well here and was still in there fighting until falling two out last time. Drumconnor Lad, Game Of War and Cracking Find have also shown enough recently to suggest they’re fairly treated.

RACE FOUR

CAFE PUSHKIN was unable to build on the promise of his debut fourth at Wincanton in November last year in two subsequent appearances. However, his stable is in much better form this season and an opening mark of 110 might be a workable one. Well Educated has run with credit in both his hurdle outings to date and he is of interest along with Jaytee, who finished second at Warwick earlier this month, and Doyen La Lutte.

SILVER HALLMARK wasn’t disgraced on his return to action when fourth at Carlisle in October and connections have been patient in waiting for softer conditions, with the step up to 3m likely to see him improve on only his fourth start over the larger obstacles. Cloudy Glen went up 10lb for his Ladbrokes Trophy success at Newbury, but he has been a tricky customer at times and the main threat may come from Empire Steel, who finished second at Haydock last month.

RACE SIX

UNEXPECTED PARTY has done nothing but improve during his short racing career to date and the C&D scorer potentially looks a notch above these rivals. Fly Smart has swapped Ireland (Willie Mullins) for England (Venetia Williams) and it would come as no surprise to see this French bumper winner run a big race on his handicap debut, while Severance certainly isn’t out of it either.

WOR VERGE will arrive full of confidence following recent victories at Newcastle and Kelso and a further 5lb rise in the ratings might not be enough to stop this in-form gelding. Course winner Applaus posted a solid placed effort at Southwell last time and he could be in the shake-up again, while Kihavah and Ballybreeze are others to watch out for.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three miles and 45 yards handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
