UNDERSTANDING THE LANGUAGE OF RACING

Do not be put off by the STRANGE TERMS you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the NOVICE RACEGOER will soon PICK UP a smattering of the LANGUAGE, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those RACEGOERS keen to enhance their LANGUAGE SKILLS.

ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience ALL WEATHER RACING Flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status APPRENTICE / CONDITIONAL young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding - they can claim an Allowance depending on how many races that they have won BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice/conditional COLT male, ungelded horse up to four- years-old COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track DAM mother of a horse DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 miles, 2 1/2 furlongs of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point) DRAW for Flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls,

drawn randomly the day before EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings thus £5 at evens wins a further £5 FILLY female horse up to four-years-old FOAL horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile) GELDING castrated horse GOING the description of conditions underfoot on the racecourse. PENALTY weight added to the allotted handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were originally published PHOTO FINISH electronic photographic device which determines minimal distances in a close finish PLATE shoe worn by horse for racing PONY betting parlance for £25 RULE 4 betting rule covering deductions made from winning bets if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed but before the ‘Under Starter’s Orders’ signal; the amount deducted depends on the price of the withdrawn horse RUN FREE describes a horse going too fast, usually early in the race, to allow it to settle SCOPE the potential for physical development in a horse SIRE father of a horse SPREAD A PLATE when a racing plate or horseshoe becomes detached from an animal’s hoof, this sometimes causes a delay while the horse is re-shod SPRINGER/STEAMER a horse which shortens dramatically in the betting SP/STARTING PRICE the official price of a horse at which bets are settled in the betting shops STEWARDS the panel of men and women - usually a total of four - who are responsible for seeing that the Rules of Racing are adhered to STEWARDS’ ENQUIRY enquiry by the stewards into the running of a race TIC-TAC the bookmaker’s method

of relaying odds information on the racecourse, by means of hand signals WEIGH IN/WEIGH OUT weighing of jockey before and after a race to ensure that the correct weight has been carried; the announcement ‘weighed in’ signals that the result is official, and all bets can be settled YANKEE combination bet involving four selections in different races: six doubles, four trebles and one four-horse accumulator - eleven bets YEARLING horse of either sex from 1st January to 31st December of the year following its birth.

How to place a bet with a racecourse bookmaker: 1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager. 2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, state the racecard number of your chosen horse. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet. 3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings. 4. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights. 6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

YESTERDAY’S LISTED RACES

Our two Listed races here yesterday produced a couple of noteworthy winners, with the first being a juvenile to take note of for the future. Seven eventually went to post to compete in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle, which went the way of the well-supported Porticello for trainer Gary Moore, with son Jamie Moore in the saddle. The winner of a subsequent hot race at Auteuil back in April for David Cottin, the three-year-old confirmed his status as an exciting prospect by beating the staying-on Genuflex and previous dual-hurdle scorer Sacre Pierre by about four lengths, despite the burden of a 5lbs penalty.

The early fractions had been set by the keen-travelling Battle Angel, but the grey was quickly picked up by Keepyourdreamsbig and the eventual winner approaching the home bend. The latter ran a big race to eventually finish fourth, but there was no doubt who the best horse on the day was on the run to the line.

The Cash Out At bet365 Handicap Chase looked to be a tighter race to call on paper, as 10 well-matched chasers tackled the 2m3f Listed event. However, the market once again called it correctly as the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Good Boy Bobby held off all challengers to win from the front with an impressive display of jumping under regular pilot Daryl Jacob.

After shaking off Sue Smith’s Joke Dancer down the home straight, the remaining two fences looked to be the main danger to the Flemensfirth gelding, but after negotiating the pair of them successfully the eight-year-old was ridden out to beat the staying on Cracking Destiny into second, with Galahad Quest eventually finishing an honourable third under David Noonan.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

THE BUZZ by Wetherbee

RACE ONE

GERICAULT ROQUE showed plenty in the bumper/hurdle sphere last season, finishing off with an impressive victory at Sandown, and he makes plenty of appeal off a mark of 124 on his chasing debut. He has attracted market support in the days leading up to this race, and is open to any amount of improvement, so everything points to a big run. Revels Hill’s profile isn’t too dissimilar, ending last season with a handicap hurdle win and making his chasing debut today, and he rates the biggest threat. Bangor scorer Tanarpino and first-time blinkered Sizing At Midnight are other names to note.

WIN: GERICAULT ROQUE

DANGER: Revels Hill

RACE TWO

Miranda and Molly Ollys Wishes are the joint top-rated performers in this line-up and both warrant respect on their return to action, similarly Marie’s Rock, an exciting four-year-old who has undergone wind surgery following a couple of disappointing efforts last season. However, although she has a little to find on official figures, a chance is taken on HER INDOORS. Alan King has been amongst the winners of late, she produced a career-best performance when winning in Grade 3 company on her latest hurdles outing at Cheltenham in April and, unlike her main rivals, is race-fit following a recent spin on the Flat at Nottingham.

WIN: HER INDOORS

DANGER: Molly Ollys Wishes

RACE THREE

Paisley Park has a fine record when fresh and this could well be the right time to catch him. However, he was disappointing when last sighted at Aintree in April and conceding 6lb and upwards to these rivals is no easy task. Whereas that rival arrives with a few questions to answer, THOMAS DARBY produced a career-best performance when upped to an extended 3m trip for the first time in the aforementioned Aintree contest and he could be the one to side with for an Olly Murphy stable in tremendous form. Indefatigable had a recent (winning) spin on the Flat to tune her up for this, while Irish raider Run For Oscar adds further spice to the race.

WIN: THOMAS DARBY

DANGER: Paisley Park

RACE FOUR

Last year’s winner Cyrname has questions to answer after being pulled up on his last two starts, but he is a proven Grade 1 performer and looks the one to beat in defence of his crown, especially if he improves for the wind operation he has had since his last outing. Shan Blue showed plenty of promise as a novice and is an interesting contender, but CLONDAW CASTLE took his form to a new level last season and was not disgraced when finishing a distant second behind Clan Des Obeaux in the Grade 1 Betfair Bowl at Aintree when last seen, so he could be the answer.

WIN: CLONDAW CASTLE

RACE FIVE

MACKENBERG makes his handicap debut after ending his novice campaign with a facile victory at Kempton in April and with further improvement on the cards, he is a big player in this contest. Bourbon Beauty is also stepping out of novice company this season and she ended last season with victory in a Grade 2 mares’ handicap hurdle at Newbury, so it would be no surprise to see her involved as well. Clemencia fell at the first hurdle on her latest outing, but she could be dangerous if she recaptures the form that saw her finish fourth at Cheltenham in December last year.

WIN: MACKENBERG

DANGER: Bourbon Beauty

RACE SIX

TAMAR BRIDGE built on his third over C&D on hurdling debut when running out an easy winner at Ayr in March and this appears to be a suitable opportunity for Olly Murphy’s gelding to score under a penalty before moving into open company. Kalmoor ran with a fair amount of promise behind a decent type of Nicky Henderson’s when second in a bumper at Huntingdon and the step up in trip promises to suit based on his pedigree, while Hidden Heroics warrants plenty of respect on his Rules debut.

WIN: TAMAR BRIDGE

DANGER: Kalmoor

RACE SEVEN

SOYOUTHINKSOAGAIN jumped well when runner-up on his chasing debut at Newton Abbot and Dan Skelton’s gelding is entitled to have improved from that effort, with the handicapper leaving him on the same rating a plus. Ecossais was progressive last season and could have more to offer this campaign, while Quick Draw, who finished third on his chasing bow at Huntingdon, and Ask Paddy are both capable of a decent showing.

WIN: SOYOUTHINKSOAGAIN

DANGER: Ecossais

AD RIAN SCOT T

My father, Adrian Scott, was a great dad, grandad, brother and friend to everyone who new him. He was an avid racing fan, and for the past 15 years he organised for a group of his family and friends to come racing here at Wetherby each Charlie Hall Chase day; This was one of the highlights of his year. Tragically, on Saturday 2nd November 2019, after what had been another fantastic day at Wetherby, a terrible accident happened after racing. The group were walking back into Wetherby following racing when my father and one of his friends, Lee Roberts, were both hit by a passing car. Despite the best efforts of several members of the public, and the fast actions of the emergency services, my father sadly lost his life that night. Thankfully, despite being severely injured, the incredible treatment that Lee received did save his life, for which we will all be ever grateful. On behalf of our family, and that of Lee Roberts, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who was on hand that night; the members of the general public, the Yorkshire Ambulance paramedics, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew and West Yorkshire Police for all their efforts to help my father. What an incredible, selfless team of people they all are and, although tragically my father couldn’t be saved, it is without doubt that Lee Roberts would not be here with us to enjoy today if it wasn’t for their swift actions and attention. On behalf of both families and all of our friends, thank you so very much. My father would be the first to say that life must carry on and therefore his family & friends are here racing again today, to carry on the fantastic tradition started by him all those years ago, and to celebrate his wonderful life, one which he lived to the fullest. We hope that everyone here at Wetherby Races today has a wonderful day, enjoys great success and, above all else, cherishes every day that comes your way. With all our Love and Best Wishes Gareth Scott, The Scott Family and Friends xx

Longest Traveller: SIZING AT MIDNIGHT trained by C Tizzard, Sherborne, 291 miles. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 125 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 120.

GERICAULT ROQUE signed off last season with a convincing success in a handicap hurdle and he has all the hallmarks of one who will make a better chaser, so he’s narrowly preferred to Corran Cross, who should benefit from a drop back in trip having shaped well on his debut for Richard Bandey. RACE DESCRIPTION Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this two miles mares’ hurdle race will now have an official rating that makes it no longer feasible to run them in handicaps and will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially, weight is allocated according to age, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at this level or above. These penalties range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 success to 6lb for a Grade 1 or 2 victory.

PLAY SMARTER

An intriguing field for this Grade 2 and INDEFATIGABLE may be the answer. She’s yet to prove her stamina for 3m but hasn’t had many tries to do so and is clearly fit and well having won on the Flat earlier in the month. Thomas Darby has a suspect attitude but will be a big threat if reproducing his Aintree third, while Paisley Park should bounce back given his overall profile.

THE BET365 CHARLIE HALL CHASE (GRADE 2)

HISTORY First ran in 1969, this race was originally named the Wetherby Pattern Chase. It was renamed the Emblem Handicap Chase in honour of the winner of the 1863 Grand National, and became known as the Charlie Hall Memorial Wetherby Pattern Chase in 1978. The race was named in memory of trainer Charlie Hall, and was shortened to it’s current guise in 1990. Bet365 have sponsored the race since 2003. The hugely popular Cue Card won this race in superb style in 2015, and went on to land both the Betfair Chase at Haydock and Kempton’s King George VI on Boxing Day. He returned to Wetherby in 2016 but failed to secure the double, being beaten into third place behind the Rebecca Curtis-trained grey, Irish Cavalier, and 2014 winner Menorah.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

PLAY SMARTER

TAMAR BRIDGE cruised home with loads in hand at Ayr in March, and although the form is not worth a great deal, there is almost certainly better to come from him yet, so he’s fancied to defy a penalty. Dan Skelton won this race last year with a useful type so winning pointer Hidden Heroics commands plenty of respect, especially if the market speaks in his favour. Kalmoor is another to note.

FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK | FACTS | FANCIES | FORM | STATS | Leading course trainer (16-21): D Skelton (43 wins from 156 runners, 28%) runs SOYOUTHINKSOAGAIN Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D Skelton (5 wins from 39 runners, 13%) runs SOYOUTHINKSOAGAIN Weightwatcher: FINGERONTHESWITCH won off a handicap mark of 122, his rating is now down 12lb to 110. Longest Traveller: FINGERONTHESWITCH & FRAU GEORGIA trained by N Mulholland, Limpley Stoke, 231 miles. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three miles handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.
