Give horses like Slinky a second chance. Slinky was rescued from appalling conditions. Years of manure had built up in his stable to above door height. To rescue him and other horses like him, the fire brigade had to be called to dig them out. After almost a day of digging, Slinky was safely freed, but left petrified, physically weak and mentally scarred. Right now, hundreds of horses like Slinky are being rescued from a life of mistreatment, cruelty and neglect. Sadly, the number of cases is at an all-time high.

We rely on donations. We rely on your help. As part of our Second Chance for Horses appeal, we work with the RSPCA to rehome as many animals as we can into BHS Approved Riding Schools. So we can let them rest, recover and rediscover a better life as a ridden horse. Our riding centres are home to BHS-qualified professionals who are equipped with the understanding, patience, skills and knowledge needed to assist and rehabilitate those horses in desperate need. Without the help of our brilliant riding schools, and your support, they face an uncertain future.

PAY THE PIPER

LAST TIME OUT | Wednesday 13th October Racing returned to Wetherby on Wednesday 13th October for the opening meeting of the season, in support of Spinal Research, which saw fans finally return to the course for the first time in 18 months. They were treated to seven races on a sunny autumn afternoon, with the Mary Lofthouse Supporting Spinal Research Novices’ Chase the first of five Class 3 contests on the card. Following the withdrawal of impressive recent Cheltenham-scorer Third Time Lucki, just two went down to post for the 1m7f test. But two would soon become one when the outsider of the pair Hardy Du Seuil fell at the first fence, leaving the Ann Hamilton-trained Pay The Piper and partner Danny McMenamin to come home in splendid isolation after successfully negotiating the remaining dozen fences in good style. The Bobby Renton Handicap a little later in the afternoon was anything but predictable, however, as the five runners were all sent off between 5/2 and 8/1 in the betting for the 2m3f chase. And turning in all five still looked to have a chance approaching the first in the home straight, before it was left to the Donald McCaintrained Gaelik Coast and Philip Kirby’s Whoshotthesheriff to battle out the finish approaching the final obstacle. A better jump from the latter under Sean Quinlan was likely the difference, as Whoshotthesheriff just held on to win by a fast-diminishing head from his rallying rival. The following 3m Bridges Modular New Entrance Building Handicap Hurdle also produced a tight

finish, with seven of the eight runners jumping the last within two lengths of each other. The closing stages eventually boiled down to a duel between the joint-rated Teescomponents Lad, under 7lb claimer Tom Midgley, and the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Flight Deck, with Jonjo O’Neill Jr’s mount always doing enough in the green and gold of owner J P McManus. Not to be outdone, the Peter Beaumont Memorial Handicap Chase provided an even closer finish, with the O’Neill team this time on the losing side of a prolonged battle down the home straight as their Prince Escalus narrowly failed to get up on the line behind Rebecca Menzies’ Return Ticket. The joint top-weight was just 2lb above his last winning mark and showed a good attitude when asked to go and win his race by jockey Henry Brooke. The final race on the card saw Pam Sly’s Takeit Easy land the Watch Racing TV Anywhere Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle. Given a patient ride by partner Paul O’Brien before being produced at the last, the Malinas gelding responded better than the smooth-travelling Tommy’s Oscar to score by a little over a length. The opening Olicana Park ‘Dingham Dash’ Juvenile Hurdle went the way of Mark Walford’s Battle Angel, with the three-year-old filly staying on best of all to score by a little under three lengths from the well-backed New Reality, while long odds-on shot Glencassley was always doing enough to win the Micky Hammond ‘Back On Track’ Novices’ Hurdle for Charlie Longsdon and Brian Hughes.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front.

THE BUZZ by Wetherbee

RACE ONE

Dr. Richard Newland has a terrific record around here and MOTION IN LIMINE could be yet another shrewd purchase from Irish shores. Not beaten far on stable debut earlier in the month at Huntingdon, the sixyear-old was a winner at Downpatrick on his penultimate outing for previous connections and can give a good account here. Grand Lord seemed to bump into one on his seasonal return and he is likely to enter the reckoning, along with Ludlow second Dynali. Unexpected Party is of interest as well on handicap debut.

WIN: MOTION IN LIMINE

DANGER: Grand Lord

RACE TWO

NOT WHAT IT SEEMS has yet to get off the mark over hurdles but he may not get a better opportunity than this, having placed on his last two starts here and the step up in trip is expected to suit. Runner-up on his last two outings, Getthepot can give the selection most to think about on his first start for new connections. Flexi Furlough arrives with a similar profile, though she has been raised another 3lb for an fine runner-up effort at Perth. Alright Marlene and Rock The House complete the shortlist.

WIN: NOT WHAT IT SEEMS

DANGER: Getthepot

RACE THREE

AHOY SENOR can take full advantage of favourable race conditions as he looks to make a winning start over the larger obstacles. An impressive winner of the Grade 1 Sefton at Aintree back in April, Lucinda Russel’s stable star is well clear of his rivals on ratings and can make his class tell here. Barbados Buck’s always looked a chaser in the making last season and despite a tame effort in the Albert Bartlett, he remains a stayer of considerable potential. Ashtown Lad must also enter calculations.

WIN: AHOY SENOR

DANGER: Barbados Buck’s

RACE FOUR

SON OF RED won on his hurdling debut at Newcastle last November before not disgracing himself against tougher opposition in two subsequent outings. Alan King’s gelding had a spin on the all-weather when fourth at Lingfield last month and he is expected to progress from that effort. Restandbethankful didn’t run too badly on his return at Chepstow and he can enter calculations along with Champagne City, who didn’t run up to scratch at Fontwell last time.

WIN: SON OF RED

DANGER: Restandbethankful

RACE FIVE

Porticello won nicely on his racecourse debut at Auteuil in April and the form of that contest has already received a boost with the runner-up, Magistrato, winning at Chepstow earlier in the month. However, he may lack race fitness against the likes of TOO FRIENDLY and Oceanline. The pair met at Stratford on their hurdling debuts, with the former coming out on top, and Dan Skelton’s gelding gets the vote to confirm that effort.

WIN: TOO FRIENDLY

DANGER: Oceanline

RACE SIX

ECLAIR D’AINAY improved 21lb in his first season over fences, with victories at Chepstow and Kelso, and Dan Skelton’s seven-year-old remains open to further improvement on just his sixth chase start. Galahad Quest improved with each start over fences, ending his season with a win at Haydock in February, and the expected rain in the forecast will aid his cause. Whoshotthesheriff, Magic Saint and Laskalin add further spice to what looks a highly competitive event on paper.

WIN: ECLAIR D’AINAY

DANGER: Galahad Quest

RACE SEVEN

Larch Hill has yet to taste defeat for this yard, scoring comfortably from the front at Huntingdon on his most recent run, and should make another bold bid as he drops in trip. However, the eight-year-old may have to play second fiddle on this occasion to the Tom George-trained CASA TALL, who impressed when winning in a first-time tongue-tie at Newton Abbot when last seen in August. Finistere shaped as though in need of the run on his return at Huntingdon last time and is also worth noting.

WIN: CASA TALL

DANGER: Larch Hill

RACE EIGHT

KNICKERBOCKERGLORY looked a horse with plenty of potential when hacking up in a bumper at Ludlow in January and, on his first start for Dan Skelton, the five-year-old is tipped to make a winning hurdling debut. Guardino improved when getting off the mark in a Kempton bumper when last seen in February and should go well on his first start over obstacles, while Monte Igueldo shaped well on his sole outing in France and is an intriguing recruit for his new yard.

WIN: KNICKERBOCKERGLORY

DANGER: Guardino

I have always wanted to be a jockey even from when I was little, I would tack up and ride the sofa arm watching the races and trying to win, imagining I was in the race beating AP McCoy on the nod every time. Now finally I have a chance to get onto a racetrack and see how I can do.

I have always had a passion for horse racing, I have worked in the racing industry for the last eight years. When I applied for this charity race, I never thought I would get picked so that came as a massive shock but is a great honour to have this amazing opportunity. I have decided to raise money for the Changing Lives through Horses campaign. This campaign was the main reason I was encouraged to apply for the charity race, I think this is an amazing program with real benefits, I know a lot of young people who have struggled with communication in school and have struggled with life skills you and I would take for granted.

I have always enjoyed going to the races for many years as a spectator and have always thought it would be good fun to be on the other side of the railings. So, this year I decided to take on the challenge of learning something new and what better way to do that than through raising money for charity.

Last year I jumped headfirst at the opportunity to work for the BHS, and nearly a year on I am still discovering all of the amazing work they do for the equestrian community and beyond. To help raise funds for the BHS, I have opted to take up the reins to compete in the Wetherby charity race. This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and up until now only ever a crazy daydream of mine, but I’ve been given the chance to head to the starting line and race eight furlongs around a famous racecourse!

My family has always had a background within the racing community. My grandad, Edwin Tuer, was a racehorse trainer and my dad, Grant Tuer is an amateur jockey and now trains flat racehorses. After finishing A-Levels I started riding out full time on our racing yard at home, where I quickly grew a passion for the sport. I am really looking forward to riding in the charity race and training towards the fitness test which is certainly going to be a challenge.

I have been around horses all my life and first rode a pony at the age of 6 months whilst sat in a little wooden basket. I have always wanted to become a jockey but soon realised show jumping would be the sport I wished to progress with. I am really looking forward to the Wetherby charity race as I have always dreamed of riding in a race. Horses are my life giving me a purpose and reason to be strong even in the dark times we have all shared during the pandemic. I spent my late teens early twenties working in racing and loved every minute. I used to dream of what it would be like to be in an actual real- life race on the track! RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and five furlongs handicap hurdle race for novice three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is the second division of Race 1. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

WETHERBYRACES HORSE WELFARE Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst. 21

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

A few with chances, but RESTANDBETHANKFUL should take a step forward from his promising reappearance Chepstow sixth and is fancied to provide another winner for the in-form Olly Murphy team. THE WEATHERBYS NHSTALLIONS.CO.UK WENSLEYDALE JUVENILE HURDLE Eight go to post for this afternoon’s Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle, a Listed contest in which we see a rematch between Too Friendly and Oceanline. Dan Skelton’s Camelot gelding got the better of the argument when the pair clashed at Stratford at the beginning of the month, where his speed came to the fore on the sharp track. Rated 85 on the level, he was a maiden winner over 1m2f when trained by George Scott and pounced late to strike under Harry Skelton. The Skelton stable took this race two years ago with Langer Dan, who had also won his sole start over hurdles to that point. Also rated 85 on the Flat, Oceanline was more of a stayer and tried to make it a test at Stratford on his first start over hurdles. Alan King’s son of Adaay was a handicap winner over 1m6f at Sandown in August, suggesting that stamina could be his strong suit. With that in mind, Tom Cannon would probably appreciate taking a lead in a truly-run race and that scenario might well materialise with Genuflex set to represent the Milton Harris stable. Beaten by Mister Allegro (won again since) on debut, he then made all to win by 17 lengths at Sedgefield and it could be that similar tactics are implemented here. He was rated 11lbs inferior to the aforementioned duo, although he has taken well to hurdles and clearly handles good ground well. That Stratford form could be key, however, and appears to be the strongest piece of form on offer, certainly in terms of domestic juvenile hurdles. The two fillies – Addosh and Battle Angel – need to show improved form in this much stronger company, although the latter is the only course winner in the field. Similar comments would also apply to dual winner Sacre Pierre, who won twice during late-summer, and Keepyourdreamsbig, who finished runner-up to Sacre Pierre on debut, before going one place better at Worcester. Olly Murphy’s runner has since pulled-up at Fontwell. That leaves just Porticello, who is a fascinating contender on British debut. The winner of his sole start in France, he is burdened with a hefty 5lbs penalty, but could well end up being the class act in the field. He lacks a recent run, but his form is strong and being by Sholokhov, it is likely that he will cope with these much quicker conditions. The winner of a conditions hurdle for un-raced horses at Auteuil, he had Magistrato back in second and he was an impressive winner at Chepstow recently, on his first start for Paul Nicholls. The third has won twice since (latterly in Listed company), whilst the fourth and sixth have both been successful, since reappearing earlier this month. Gary Moore does well in the juvenile division and he looks to have an exciting recruit on his hands in the shape of Porticello. Paul Ferguson Weatherbys

RACE DESCRIPTION This two miles and three furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 155. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. PLAY SMARTER

FINISTERE shaped well until his stamina appeared to give out on his Huntingdon chase debut so is fancied to come good now back down at 2m. Larch Hill has thrived for the switch to the Pogsons and rates an obvious danger, while the handicapper has arguably taken a bit of a chance dropping Ballyvic Boru 4lb for his run here last time, meaning he’s now 7lb lower than when winning this last year.
