THE OPENING MEETING SUPPORTING SPINAL RESEARCH OFFICIAL PROGRAMME & FORM GUIDE £2.50

www.wetherbyracing.co.uk

A great day at the races!

WELCOME TO WETHERBY RACECOURSE! Following the disruptions that British Racing and all of us who participate have been suffering over the past 18 months, it is with great pleasure (and some relief!) that I find myself in a position to offer, on behalf of the Board of Directors and the Management team, a truly warm Yorkshire welcome to our new 2021/2022 racing season at Wetherby Racecourse. I am delighted to be able to report that despite the challenging circumstances under which we have been operating since the end of March last year, Wetherby Racecourse has survived intact thanks in no small part to the sterling efforts of our management team and all the racecourse staff to whom the Directors are extremely grateful. Wetherby Racecourse is also greatly indebted to its loyal race sponsors who have been most supportive, including Bet365 who will sponsor at the Bet365 Charlie Hall Chase race meeting again on 29th and 30th October and William Hill who will continue to support the William Hill Christmas Race Meeting on 26th and 27th December and the William Hill Towton Chase in February next year. We also have a new business partner in Stratstone BMW Harrogate who are providing a BMW Vehicle for this coming race season. I am pleased to be able to announce the completion of two improvement schemes. One being the new main entrance through which many of you will have entered the racecourse today, and the other is a new stables canteen facility for the use of all the people who bring and look after the horses that come to Wetherby and whose contribution to the whole racing industry must never be underestimated. Aided by our Management team the Board will continue to work through a list of projects that are designed to improve both the race day experience for the supporters of Wetherby and/or the efficiency of the racecourse operation and the Directors are very pleased to have been able to successfully complete the new entrance and the new stable canteen facility, despite the many disruptions caused by the pandemic. In conclusion, I would like to say a huge “THANK YOU” on behalf Wetherby Racecourse to all our Sponsors, to the Owners and Trainers who bring their horses, to the Jockeys who ride them, to the Stable Staff who care for them and to YOU, our loyal public who come to see them and to wish you all an enjoyable and successful season ahead. KEEP SAFE! John Sanderson Chairman Wetherby Steeplechase Committee Limited

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

THE BUZZ by Wetherbee

RACE ONE

NEW REALITY may have been lucky to make a winning debut over hurdles at Perth last month, left clear when the leader fell at the last, but it was still a very promising display. The penalty he carries for that success is a slight concern but he remains the one to beat. Battle Angel boasts some smart Flat form and merits respect, while Royal Regard completes the shortlist.

WIN: NEW REALITY

DANGER: BATTLE ANGEL

RACE TWO

THIRD TIME LUCKI ran well in some top-class hurdle races last season and he is hard to oppose on his chasing debut this afternoon, especially as he may improve for a wind operation over the summer. Pay The Piper only found one too good in a handicap last time off a mark of 140 and he is an obvious threat to the selection. Hardy Du Seuil won over hurdles in France and he should not be underestimated on his UK debut.

WIN: THIRD TIME LUCKI

DANGER: PAY THE PIPER

RACE THREE

Glencassley was an impressive winner on his hurdling debut in May and he has to be respected this afternoon. That said, he may struggle to give 7lb to CARDANO, who is a six-time winner on the Flat. The son of Oasis Dream has hit the crossbar on his last couple of starts on the level off very high marks and he could prove to be above average over obstacles. 2019 Cheltenham Festival winner Siruh Du Lac should not be underestimated on his return to action, despite three letters next to his name.

WIN: CARDANO

DANGER: GLENCASSLEY

RACE FOUR

ROAD WARRIOR ended his previous campaign with a quick-fire hat-trick and, considering he has a respectable record fresh, he’s expected to mount a bold bid after a lengthy break. Whoshotthesheriff was no match for the classy Allmankind on his latest outing but he’s considered in these calmer waters, while Yccs Portocervo has only found one rival too strong on each of his last three starts and he also warrants respect.

WIN: ROAD WARRIOR

DANGER: WHOSHOTTHESHERIFF

RACE FIVE

Solid cases can be made for most of the runners in this field, with NATIVE FIGHTER narrowly favoured to land the spoils. The seven-year-old gelding has been enjoying a consistent campaign and further progression could be on the horizon. Catchmeifyoucan has been knocking on the door of late and he demands the utmost respect, while Flight Deck is still unexposed and worth a close look after a lengthy absence.

WIN: NATIVE FIGHTER

DANGER: CATCHMEIFYOUCAN

RACE SIX

This grade should suit Some Reign on his seasonal return for his in-form stable. Last seen in Listed company at Ayr, he had previously won off 3lb lower than this at Carlisle and a repeat of that would give him every chance. Prince Escalus may have a fitness edge having finished third at Market Rasen on his chasing debut last month and he now drops back in trip, but ACROSS THE LINE may be better suited by this distance and could make up into a smart chaser this season.

WIN: ACROSS THE LINE

DANGER: PRINCE ESCALUS

RACE SEVEN

Constancio was second at Plumpton last month off this mark, though his latest win was last October off the same rating at the Sussex track. He can get involved on that form, but TOMMY’S OSCAR may have his measure. Last season he won a class 2 handicap at Kelso before a Scottish Champion Hurdle third and he could well go close off only 1lb higher today. Alqamar, chasing a five-timer, may have to settle for third.

WIN: TOMMY’S OSCAR

DANGER: CONSTANCIO

PLAY SMARTER

NEW REALITY was probably booked for second until Aliomaana fell late on at Perth last month, but either way it was a promising start and with that rival winning very easily next time, Nigel Hawke’s charge can defy a penalty. We Still Believe and Nastasiya are expected to leave their opening efforts in this sphere behind and offer most resistance.

When Tara Stewart’s horse bucked her off, like many of us, it wasn’t the first time she’d left the saddle in that manner, but this time she landed very badly and her life changed forever. She says, “I heard my neck snap and I was instantly paralysed from the chest down.” Now diagnosed as tetraplegic (without the use of her hands or her legs), this previously fiercely independent, sporty individual finds herself relying on others to help her with the simplest of everyday tasks. “It’s every rider’s nightmare. You know the risks but you always hope that it doesn’t happen to you. If I’d landed an inch differently one way or the other, I would have walked away. In fact, I could have broken most of the bones in my body and still healed but damage to the spinal cord is something we still don’t know how to cure - but we are getting closer. Even small breakthroughs can make a big difference to someone in my position.”

Bel’s Story

A split second on a beautiful summer afternoon and a slip while playing on the climbing frame in a neighbour’s back garden, transformed eight year old Bel’s life forever. Her childhood was shattered. Bel spent ten months in intensive care. Bel remains paralysed from the neck down unable to breathe for herself, and completely reliant on her family and carers. Bel faces a lifetime of care unless there is a treatment for her paralysis. That is why our scientists are working hard to find that treatment. Every day three people in the UK and Ireland will have a traumatic spinal cord injury. Spinal cord injury can happen to anyone at any stage in their life. It is a split second moment which transforms lives irrevocably. It’s not just walking - it’s the inability to breathe independently, to control your bladder and bowel, to lift a cup to take a drink - to hug a loved one good night. Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop effective treatments for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury.

Please donate today and help change the future for Bel. Text WETHERBY to 70460 to donate £5 Texts will cost the donation amount plus one standard network rate message.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles, three and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

BOBBY RENTON

The late Bobby Renton trained many winners from his base at Oxclose, near Ripon, including the 1950 Grand National winner, Freebooter. He also trained Red Rum before he became a household name. His long and distinguished training career lasted for some 50 years. He occasionally rode his own horses as an amateur rider, and he was a sprightly 75 years old when riding in his last race - a selling hurdle at Hexham on September 30th, 1963. He finished unplaced on Devon Peter, thereby being acknowledged as Britain’s oldest jockey! 21

Peter Beaumont August 2nd 1934 to March 30th 2020

Sadly, just 11 days into the first lockdown of the Covid19 pandemic, Gold Cup winning trainer and supporter of Wetherby, Peter Beaumont, passed away in his sleep aged 85years. Born on August 2nd 1934, Peter was brought up in Ripley near Harrogate by Father Alfie and Mother Vera, brother of Pat and the late John Beaumont. Having grown up as a child during wartime, he remembered his father’s beloved hunters being taken away to war, and the hardships that were felt throughout the land, and of course in the farming, hunting and point to point community in which they lived. The qualities of hard work, honesty, and a certain Yorkshire stoicism were learnt then, and were to mark Peter out throughout his lifetime. Happy days in the Bramham Moor Pony Club, along with an impressive trophy haul at Ripley Show among many other shows and hunter trials were then inevitably followed by hunting and point to pointing. Horses such as Rastus and The White Horse were to provide some great wins for the father/son, trainer/jockey partnership, until a bad fall in his early twenties put an early end to Peters aspirations to be a top amateur jockey. However he had, by this time, met his sweetheart and soon to be wife, Margaret Rose Revill. They met through Knaresborough Young Farmers Club, and friends such as Willie and Frances Houseman, John and Judy Elliot, sister Pat and her late husband John, were just a few of the many friendships which lasted through their lifetimes. In 1968, another wonderful friend, Miss Joyce Hey, who had been taught to ride by Alfie at Ripley, bought Foulrice Farm at Brandsby in 1968 and asked Peter and Margaret to move in as tenants.

A small dairy farm was quickly established, with hunter liveries, point to pointers and young horses sent for Peters’ kind and sympathetic handling and expert horsemanship. Long hours and hard work by both Peter and Margaret, whilst bringing up their young family, paid off with increasing success in the Point to Point field, with Sporting Luck being the first of several star horses to put Peters name on the map. More boxes were built, and more horses arrived, until, at the behest of owners Josie Knowles and Judy Plummer, a trainers licence was taken out in 1986. Their homebred horse, JJHenry, was the first horse to make Peter’s name under NH rules winning 6 Novice ‘Chases and 11 Chases in total, including the 1991 John Hughes Memorial Trophy (now the Topham Trophy) at Aintree. He was ridden to all his victories by Peter’s daughter Anthea, the Clerk of the Course here at Cartmel. Peter soon became known for sourcing and training a wonderful stamp of staying chaser. The best of these was the 1993 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Jodami, a horse who also won three successive Irish Gold Cups. There were winners of other illustrious races such as Young Kenny who won a Scottish Grand National, and Hussard Collonges who won the RSA Chase at Cheltenham for the Bannister family, along with lovely chasers such as Island Chief, Niki Dee, Bobby Grant, to name but a few, who placed Peters name on the role of honour for such as the Midlands Grand National, Tommy Whittle ‘Chase, Peter Marsh ‘Chase, Mandarin etc. With just a handful of select horses that he purchased astutely and brought along with a special brand of patience and kindness, he established himself in the top rung of NH trainers, and remains the last Northern trainer to have trained both a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, and the winner of the RSA. Peter was a farmer and trainer, stockman and horseman. He truly was the kindest of men, a gentleman in the true sense of the word. Decent, modest and mindful of others he was a wonderful father to Stuart and Anthea, and a fantastic Grandfather to Henry. He gathered friends everywhere he went, and had time for everyone. Sadly his genial smile and infectious twinkle is no longer with us, but the numerous happy tales of time spent with Peter ensures his legacy will last for many years to come.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION This two miles handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 140. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage. This handicap hurdle is restricted to conditonal jockeys who are given claims based on the number of winners ridden before October 10th 2021.

Conceding weight all round in this small but select field won’t be easy, but TOMMY’S OSCAR could be equal to the task. Indeed, he enjoyed a most productive novice campaign last term, culminating in a solid effort in the Scottish Champion Hurdle, and may well have more to offer this season. Constancio, Alqamar and Takeit Easy (in that order of preference) are all greatly respected.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
