Foreword
MyfamilyandIwouldliketowelcomeyoualltothe12thWellingtonInternational HorseTrialsandCountryFair.
TheCountryFairhasprovedtobeagreatsuccessinrecentyears,generatingmuchincreasedinterestduetotherangeoffamilyattractions,arenadisplaysandtrade standvillage.Wehopethisyearwillcontinuetobeanenjoyableexperiencefor visitingfamilies.
Weareequallypleasedtointroducenewtrackstoour2023eventtoallowforfresh groundforeachcourseandnewfencesforitscompetitors.
Theeventhasbeenawardedinternationalstatusfrom2020to2025byBritish Eventingandthescheduleforotherclassesin2023hasbeenextended.These additionswillallowlocalriderstheexperienceofcompetingalongsideworld-class ridersinthenewarenascreatedthroughoutthesite.
WearealsoproudtohosttheprestigiousPC110Championshipforathirdyear whichwelcomesThePonyClubcompetitorsfromacrossthecountryfortheir nationalchampionship.
Therearemanypeopletothankwhoassistinthesmoothrunningofthisevent.The sportsimplycouldnotcontinuewithoutthesupportofvolunteerswhogenerously givetheirvaluabletime.Wealsothanktheofficials,judgesandofcoursetheowners andriders.

ThefirstEventingcompetitionwasrecordedinFrancein1902anditbecamean officialOlympicsportin1912.EventingintheUKstartedin1949whenBadminton HorseTrialswereheldforthefirsttime.
TheobjectoftheeventwastotestCavalryOfficers'chargersfortheirfitnessand sustainability.
Dressage ShowJumping CrossCountry
Dressageoriginally demonstrated thehorsesabilitytoperformon the paradeground,where eleganceand obediencewerekey.
Dressagecomprisesofasetsequence ofcompulsorymovementsina markedarena. Eachmovementis markedoutoftenwiththetotal beingaddedup.Inpuredressage thescoreisconvertedtoa percentageandhighestpercentage wins.
InEventingthescoreisconverted intopenaltieswherethelowestis thebest.
Designedtotesttheagilityand obedienceofthehorse;thisphase ofthecompetitionisheldinan arenawherehorseandridertackle aroundof8-12jumps.
Ifthehorseknocksapoleoffthe jumpitwillincurfourpenalties, whichareaddedtothedressage penaltyscore.
Penaltiesarealsoaddedifthe horserefusestojump,theriderfalls off(eliminationinsomecases)orif thetimelimitisexceeded.Arefusal oraknockdownincursfour penalties.
Crosscountrybeganasatestof stamina,courageandbraveryover difficultterrain.Itwasimportantfor achargeronlongmarchesorifa horsewasneededtocarrya dispatchacrosscountry.
Todayridershavetojumpacourse ofsolidobstacleswithinatime limit,refusals,riderfalls(whichcan resultineliminationinsomecases), goingtooslowandgoingtoofast allresultingainingpenalties.
Thisphasecanbeveryinfluentialas arefusalincurs20penalties.
Everyonewantsa“clearwithinthe time”,sonopointsareaddedto theirscore.Aftercompetinginall threedisciplines,thepersonwith thelowestscorewins.

Officials
4.Stewards,Judges,Officialsarebriefedandtrainedintheir dutiesandprovidedwiththerelevantequipmenttocarry outtheirduties.
5.TheyarerequiredtobringtotheattentionoftheHealth andSafetyStewardanyconcernstheyhaveforthehealth, safetyandwelfareofthegeneralpublic.
6.TheyarerequiredtobringtotheattentionoftheTechnical AdvisororStewardanyconcernstheymayhaveforthe Health,SafetyandWelfareofthecompetitors.
7.Theyarerequiredtoconductthemselvesinsuchamanner nottoputthemselforanyoneelseatriskandmaintain controloftheareaaroundtheirlocation.
8.TheTechnicalAdviser,StewardorHealthandSafety StewardarerequiredtoensurethatJudgesandOfficials areproperlybriefedintheirdutiesandareproperly equipped.
Spectators/Visitors
9.Stepsaretakentoensurethehealth,safetyandwelfareof thoseattendingtheevent.Spectators/visitorsare:
a.Directedclearlytowherevertheywanttogowith on-sitesignage.
b.Preventedfromstrayinginadvertentlyintothepathof oncominghorsesbycrossingpoints,signage, stringing,whistleblastsorpublicaddress announcements.
c.Advisedthatinformationandguidanceregardingthe eventisavailableinthedigitalprogramme.
Contractors
10.AllcontractorsworkingattheEventarerequiredtoobserve bestworkingpractices,complywithalllegislationrelevant totheirbusinessandtakeallreasonableandpractical stepstosafeguardtheiremployeesandthoseattending.
14.Accidentsinvolvinghorsesandcompetitorsarewell cateredforandtheappropriateJudgesandOfficialsare constantlyreadytoreporttheseastheyoccurandtocall forappropriateemergencyservices.
