The Charlie Wilson Memorial Hurdle

Charlie Wilson who died on 31st August 2022 aged 87 was a passionate horseman, an Owner, Breeder and a member of The Jockey Club.

The Race we are sponsoring in his honour at Warwick today reflects his love of National Hunt breeding. Seeing the development of NH bred horses from Maiden Hurdles to hopefully becoming staying chasers of the future.

Charlie was a newspaper Editor, and has been described as Racing’s best friend in the newspaper industry. He championed the coverage of racing in the Times and many other papers. He served as a member of the Jockey Club Licensing and disciplinary committees.

He bred many horses from the Delgany Stud, all of whom carry the Delgany prefix. His best love was for gutsy horses that could stay long trips - we hope to see one or two here today.

AUREUS: Following its run on 16/3/2025 it was reported that the horse ran without its right-fore shoe.

SIXTY PLUS: Following its run on 26/7/2024 it was reported that the horse’s saddle slipped.

Probable S.P’s: 6-4 Buckna (IRE), 5-2 Jack To Bat (GB), 7-2 Rock On Cowboy (IRE), 22-1 An Buachaill Rua (IRE), 28-1 Broxy Music (GB), Mr Griffiths (FR), 100-1 Aureus (GB), 150-1 Secret Vino (GB), 300-1 Sixty Plus (IRE)

Little depth to this and a good opportunity for BUCKNA to get off the mark after a series of placed efforts. Jack To Bat was a bit disappointing back from a break at Ffos Las but he remains with potential, with Rock On Cowboy the only other realistic threat.

A case can be made for most of these but the vote goes to the reliable SUPREMELY WEST who rates the pick of the weights and can bag a second win of the season in a light campaign thus far. Two-time C&D scorer Ikarak heads the list of dangers with Snipe appealing as the pick of the Dan Skelton-trained trio and also in the picture.
