How the experts rate the horse’s chances:
2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse.
3. Timeform view and TFR rating
Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race.
Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day.
OTHER USEFUL DETAILS
6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey
7. Saddlecloth number
8. Horse’s name
9. Days since the horse last run
10. Horse’s age
11. Jockey’s weight (stone and Ibs)
12. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam)
13. Horse’s owner
14. Horse’s breeder
15. Birthplace of horse (outside GB)
Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

The Jonjo O’Neill stable looks to stand a good chance ofwinning this race for the fourth time in the last 5 years courtesy of ZONDA, who has shaped like a winner in waiting in his 2 handicaps so far. Bertie B rates a likelythreat on the back ofhis recent Hereford success, while the fact that Big Blue Moon went off a short-priced favourite on his chase debut/reappearance suggests his stable thinks he’s still well treated and he could bounce back returned to hurdles.

Richard Davis was a talented jump jockey tragically killed in a fall over fences in 1996. This award is named in his memory.
Around 60 per cent of all races run in Britain each year are handicaps. But what actually is a handicap?
In simple terms, they are races where the runners carry different weights to give them an equal chance of winning. So how are the weights calculated?
Once a horse has run at least three times, or run in no more than two races in Britain and won at least one of them, they will be allocated an Official Rating, also known as a handicap mark. This rating is calculated by a team of professional handicappers employed by the British Horseracing Authority and is based on the level of form shown.
In subsequent races if a horse runs better than its rating then it may well be raised and likewise if it performs below its rating then it will be reduced.
Ratings start from around 60 at the lower end of the scale while the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. These ratings are converted to lbs for handicap purposes.
Most handicaps are designed for horses within a specific range, for example those rated between 0 & 105.
So the rating not only decides the weight that a horse will carry, it also decides which races it can run in.
In this instance a horse rated 105 is 5 higher than a horse rated 100 so considered 5lb better and hence carries 5lb more in the race In theory, the weight difference should see them cross the line together
Without handicaps, the best horses would almost always win. The guarantee of a winner may sound attractive but ultimately uncompetitive races would negatively impact Owners, Racegoers and Bookmakers.

PLAY SMARTER
VALGRAND, having been second in a point, produced a big effort to fill the same position at Cheltenham 4 months ago and, in this lesser race, he’s likely to open his account. Boston Boy is another notable recruit from between the flags and Les’s Destiny Star was an impressive winner first time out, so they’re both regarded as dangers.
