Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

PREMIER PREVIEW This afternoon’s eight-race card gets underway with a tworunner renewal of the Edward Courage Cup, a race that was won last year by Haddex des Obeaux and has now been converted into a novices’ limited handicap chase. Sky Pirate won the 2021 renewal, en route to winning the Grand Annual and connections of Etalon might have loftier ambitions for their promising seven-year-old, come the spring. He made a pleasing start to his chasing career at Newbury and ought to be able to concede 3lbs to Salamanca Bay, who makes his second start for Lucinda Russell. The Scottish trainer saddles the returning Sextant (formerly a smart Flat performer) in the second race, which is a competitive 2m handicap hurdle. Klitschko remains unexposed and capable of better, although I suspect that he would appreciate better ground, whilst Donnacha has been in fine form this season and is the solid option. A winner at Chepstow, he finished runner-up to Impose Toi (likely to be sent off favourite for this afternoon’s Lanzarote Hurdle) and third to Go Dante in a couple of competitive Cheltenham handicaps. Those who were on track on 30th March 2023 might remember
Good Boy Bobby is two from two this season with wins at Chepstow and Sandown.
Diamond Ri winning division two of the bumper in impressive fashion and he is sure to go well in the maiden hurdle, following an encouraging start at Exeter. He split a couple of aboveaverage performers and if he can sharpen up his jumping, Joe Tizzard’s chestnut looks to be the one to beat. Race four is the Pertemps Qualifier, in which a first four finish will qualify a horse for the Final at the Cheltenham Festival. Third Wind hasn’t run since winning the Final in March 2022 and races off the very same mark. Kyntara won a heavy-ground bumper at this track when trained by Kim Bailey and arrives on a hat-trick for the in-form Mel Rowley (saddled a double at Doncaster on Wednesday) and he is just 6lbs higher than when winning on testing ground at Aintree. Martha Brae is another last-time-out winner, although the ground would be a worry for Dan Skelton’s mare, whilst Mel Monroe represents Gordon Elliott who saddled Sire du Berlais to finish fourth in 2020, ahead of his second win in the Final. She is a lightlyraced novice who remains open to plenty of improvement, whilst Gentleman At Arms has already won a qualifier at Aintree. The Grade 2 Hampton Novices’
Chase has attracted five runners, of which four have already shown a high-level of form. Broadway Boy has to concede weight to all, but has done little wrong over fences and won a Cheltenham handicap off 146 last time. Grey Dawning won the now defunct Leamington Novices’ Hurdle on this card 12 months ago and after winning at Haydock, made a costly error two out at Cheltenham. The Changing Man finished in front of Grey Dawning (improved fitness-wise subsequently) when runner-up to Stay Away Fay at Exeter and was again behind the same rival when unseating Brendan Powell at Sandown. And, Apple Away was 14 lengths behind Grey Dawning on chase debut, but won with lots in hand at Leicester and will relish the longer trip, having won the Grade 1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree last spring. The feature Classic Handicap Chase comes up at 3:00, in which the Irish-raider Malina Girl is sure to be popular. A winner at Cheltenham in November, she was still travelling well behind Broadway Boy at the same track last month, so that rival could have handed her a timely form boost in the previous race. Runner-up in the London National at Sandown, Beauport has more to offer in longdistance chases and will relish the ground, as will Rowland Meyrick winner Fontaine Collonges. Her full-brother Guetapan Collonges is now 10lbs higher than when fourth
last year, so will need to show improved form, in what looks to be a strong renewal. The penultimate race is a bonus, with the Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Final) having been rescheduled after last week’s Sandown abandonment. Good Boy Bobby has been in fine form this season, winning qualifiers at both Chepstow and Sandown and has first-time cheek-pieces applied. Aye Right has a 7lbs pull for his neck second to him at Chepstow and has the assistance of the very able 7lbs claimer, Dylan Johnston. The Scottish challenger finished third at this track behind Thomas Darby, who was put up 4lbs for that success and Olly Murphy’s former Long Distance Hurdle winner is still unexposed as a chaser, with that just his sixth start over fences. He had earlier finished fourth in the Chepstow race. The card concludes with a 12-runner bumper, in which Rickety Bridge probably sets the standard, by virtue of his second at Worcester and his fourth, in Listed company, at Cheltenham. Yalla Habibi has shown good form in twice finishing second, whilst a further four runners finished placed on debut. The previous winners – Ami Bondhu and Dark Mix – add further intrigue, as does the Rules debutant Bill Joyce, who impressed when winning a maiden Point in Ireland and joined Jonjo O’Neill for £225,000.
Written by Paul Ferguson - Weatherbys
Fontaine Collonges was a 14 length winner of the Rowland Meyrick Handicap last time out.

i HEADGEAR EXPLAINED Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.
Blinkers The hustle and bustle of a racecourse can be exciting for a racehorse and so Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
Visors Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup. If you look at the two pictures in the examples you can just make out the difference. This slit enables a horse to see the other runners around them but still keeps the focus forwards.
Cheekpieces Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. Horses who struggle to perform to their best because they are too keen in their races are often prime candidates for cheekpieces.
Eye Shields Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision. Often worn at all-weather tracks where the kick-back can fly into the horses faces, the purpose of them is to prevent anything going into the horses eyes.
Hood Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. Padding around the ears restricts noise and helps to calm a nervous horse. Eye holes allow a full range of vision.
Noseband Some horses can carry their head awkwardly high which prevents them performing at their best. A noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
Tongue Strap Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping out. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race. You can just see it in the picture.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED Around 60 per cent of all races run in Britain each year are handicaps. But what actually is a handicap? In simple terms, they are races where the runners carry different weights to give them an equal chance of winning. So how are the weights calculated? Once a horse has run at least three times, or run in no more than two races in Britain and won at least one of them, they will be allocated an Official Rating, also known as a handicap mark. This rating is calculated by a team of professional handicappers employed by the British Horseracing Authority and is based on the level of form shown. In subsequent races if a horse runs better than its rating then it may well be raised and likewise if it performs below its rating then it will be reduced. Ratings start from around 60 at the lower end of the scale while the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. These ratings are converted to lbs for handicap purposes. Most handicaps are designed for horses within a specific range, for example those rated between 0 & 105. So the rating not only decides the weight that a horse will carry, it also decides which races it can run in. In this instance a horse rated 105 is 5 higher than a horse rated 100 so considered 5lb better and hence carries 5lb more in the race. In theory, the weight difference should see them cross the line together. Without handicaps, the best horses would almost always win. The guarantee of a winner may sound attractive but ultimately uncompetitive races would negatively impact Owners, Racegoers and Bookmakers.

i THOROUGHBREDS EXPLAINED Surely a horse is a horse, right? Four legs with a head at one end and a tail at the other. Strictly speaking that’s true, but in horse racing there are many different terms used to describe the horse.
Names Yearling - a horse of either sex aged one-year-old Colt - a male horse aged two, three or four-years-old Filly - a female horse aged two, three or four-years-old Horse - a male horse aged five-years-old or above Mare - a female horse aged five-years-old or above Gelding - a castrated male horse of any age
Did you know? Regardless of their actual date of birth (or foaling to use a racing term), all thoroughbred racehorses in the Northern hemisphere share the same birthday - 1st January. This avoids any element of doubt when it comes to entering a horse for an age specific race. In the Southern hemisphere all horses share 1st August due to the fact that the seasons are reversed.
Colours There are five main colours of thoroughbred racehorses, most of which you will likely see on the racecard today. These are made up of two base colours, black and chestnut. Brown - Usually a very dark brown colour and reasonably common. Bay - Bay is the most common colouring and can vary from light brown to dark brown. Without getting too technical, a bay is a genetic modification of a black base colour, and therefore the legs, mane and tail are black. Chestnut - Chestnuts range in colour from a light golden colour to a rich red and on a hot summers day, they can really stand out in the Parade Ring. Grey - Greys can vary from a dark grey to almost white. Grey horses possess a gene that modifies their original coat colour. It is a process similar to the greying of human hair and can happen at any age. Roan - A roan is very similar to a grey and the inexperienced may not be able to tell the difference. They have a slightly modified gene in that the greying only affects the body and their legs, mane and tail tend to retain their original colouring. Other colours such as black, cream and white are extremely rare and not often seen.

It was a fine ride by regular pilot Harry Skelton, the jockey has been onboard the mare for every one of her starts bar an Irish point back in 2021. Her jumping wasn’t perfect, she jumped right on occasion, though she led throughout the race. From the eighth her win began to look inevitable as she began to pull clear. She jumped the last very well and pulled even further clear, winning by an impressive 13 lengths. Paul Nicholls was unable to complete the hattrick in this event despite a fine effort from the market leader Complete Unknown. Ridden by Lorcan Williams, the gelding jumped well but just didn’t have enough to contest the lead and found no extra late on.

Sheppard kept his mount in touch with the leaders throughout the contest, moving into third from the ninth. He began to make his move after jumping the sixteenth, pushing on to press the leader.
