The Charlie Wilson Memorial Chase

Charlie Wilson who died on 31st August 2022 aged 87 was a passionate horseman, an Owner, Breeder and a member of The Jockey Club.

The Race we are sponsoring in his honour at Warwick today reflects his love of staying chasers and of supporting the Mares that are the backbone of National Hunt breeding.

Charlie was a newspaper Editor, and has been described as Racing’s best friend in the newspaper industry. He championed the coverage of racing in the Times and many other papers. He served as a member of the Jockey Club Licensing and disciplinary committees.

He bred many horses from the Delgany Stud, all of whom carry the Delgany prefix. His best love was for gutsy horses that could stay long trips - we hope to see one or two here today.

FORM 0/-0P

TIMEFORM VIEW Has shown little in 3 starts in maiden hurdles, off 22 months prior to the current season. Can only be watched on chase debut.

2022: COUPDEBOL (FR) 7 11 11 Jonathan Burke 9-2 (Tom George) 8 ran

Running for the first time since Wind Surgery No 7.

Stewards Note: MUSE OF FIRE: Following its run on 3/2/2023 it was reported that the horse would prefer a galloping track.

Probable S.P’s: 7-2 Rock of Star (FR), 9-2 Muse of Fire (IRE), 11-2 Bells of Stamford (IRE), 6-1 Stumps Or Slips (IRE), 13-2 Eros (FR), 10-1 Imperial Hope (IRE), 12-1 Sir Jack West (IRE), 18-1 Bardd (IRE), 66-1 Whiskey Times (IRE)

PLAY SMARTER

EROS shaped as if back in form when third at Exeter earlier in the month, left behind by the first 2 only on the run-in, and having dropped another 1lb, he could be ready to get off the mark. Rock Of Star could yet do better after only 3 starts over fences and is feared most, ahead of Stumps Or Slips on his chase debut.
