RoR Parade – Warwick –Wigley Group Classic Chase Day Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade – 2.03pm

A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock between 2.03pm and 2.10pm

About RoR:

The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to horses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing

Today’s parade features three familiar names who have already adapted to a new career, including the former Grand National winner, One for Arthur, Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Coneygree and Hennessy Gold Cup winner Carruthers.

To help stimulate demand for former racehorses within the wider equestrian market, RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball.

For more information visit: www.ror.org.uk

CARRUTHERS – led by Lily Bradstock

20-year-old by Kayf Tara, out of Plaid Maid, Formerly trained by Mark Bradstock Breeder – Lord Oaksey

Carruthers is the first foal of the fairy tale miracle mare Plaid Maid who was bought for £2000 and bred the winners of the Cheltenham and Hennessy Gold Cup amongst other prestigious races.

Carruthers most famously won the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury but was also an easy winner of the Leamington Novices’ Hurdle at Warwick and finished fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup amongst many other fantastic runs including 10 wins and over £320,000 in prize money.

Carruthers is fantastically kind with an extremely high IQ so he has been a pleasure to have anything to do with since he retired and is mainly a gentleman of leisure but enjoys helping to educate the young horses, giving rides to small children and generally being admired.

CONEYGREE - ridden by Sara Bradstock

16-year-old by Karinga Bay, out of Plaid Maid, Formerly trained by Mark Bradstock Breeder - Lord Oaksey

One of the leading staying chasers of his generation and the winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Coneygree was retired from racing in February 2019

He adapted quickly to a life outside of racing and since being re-trained by Mark Bradstock’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won several RoR showing classes and twice qualified for the final of the Tattersalls RoR Show Series at Hickstead.

The aim for 2023 is to once again qualify for the final of the Tattersalls showing series and the Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree

ONE FOR ARTHUR

led by Ailsa McClung

14-year-old by Milan, out of Nonnetia Formerly trained by Lucinda Russell Breeder – J P Dwan

One for Arthur needs no introduction winning seven races including the 2017 Aintree Grand National, the 2017 Warwick Classic chase and over £670,000 in prize money. Today’s rider Ailsa McClung led One for Arthur up in his second Grand National and now has the pleasure of having him for his second career He came to Ailsa last October having spent his first summer since retiring showing in Ireland with his breeder

The immediate plan is to go hunting and then RoR showing during the summer with the aim to qualify for the RoR final at the Royal Highland in June 2024 Ailsa says, “He’s always had this sort of presence about him, it’s like he knows he’s good. There is nothing he loves more than being out in the field and carrots. I have enjoyed the journey so far with Arthur and I’m exciting for the summer ahead”

The Wigley Support Fund was established in 2017 to support and help re-train injured, serving and veteran service people, equipping them with new skills for a new start.

The Wigley Group began supporting the armed forces 10 years ago, when the first of our now annual golf days was held in aid of the official Parachute Regiment charity, Support Our Paras.

Since then over £120,000 has been raised.

The Wigley Support Fund enables money raised to be more broadly allocated to help ex-service people from all regiments, providing support in all areas from military to civilian life.

Nicholls made it back-to-back wins in the Hampton Novices’ Chase, after Threeunderthrufive jumped well from the front to win in impressive style

Adrian Heskin made use of his previous starts over fences and knew he would take some stopping, were he to get into a rhythm. This was indeed the case as he didn’t see another rival, Doyen Breed was very game in second and certainly faired best of the rest but ultimately was no match for the McNeill owned gelding. The second favourite, Mint Condition raced wide throughout and couldn’t keep up with Threeunderthrufive, the Jeannie Candish trained eight-year-old eventually tired entering the straight and finished fourth. Any News completed the placings of those who got round, picking up the pieces to take third.

Stag Horn was one of the few horses to have only previously had one start over hurdles. He jumped well and Nick Scholfield decided to once again opt for the front running tactics.

He quickly went clear of the field in the early part of the race but Nick got a nice breather into him in the back straight, allowing the field to converge behind him. He then picked up nicely to get those in behind under the pump.

Despite a late charge from Gentleman At Arms, there was still plenty under the bonnet and he went onto win by two lengths.

Tom Bellamy wasted no time in getting Eclair Surf up with the pace after our previous results. He and Chirico Vallis vied for the lead early on but it was the Emma Lavelle charge that got the upper hand.

He jumped excellently out in front and had a lot of his rivals in trouble from a very early stage

Coming down the back, there looked to only be a handful of horses that could challenge him and turning for home these had been whittled down to three Favourite Gericault Roque tried to run down the leader, but the race had already slipped away from him. He picked up the rest of his rivals but Eclair Surf was not for catching, running home a 13 length victor
