David Pipe’s El Paso Wood is very much the (current) form horse, as he is searching for a hat-trick, following victories at Stratford and Uttoxeter, earlier this month. He stretched right away over a similar trip at the Midlands venue last time and is up just 4lbs for that 4-length success Prior to this month, he had won just once from 18 starts, since moving from France and has clearly improved since finishing sixth in that aforementioned Worcester race (behind the other pair), whilst the 10-year-old mare Organdi finished third. She hasn’t run since and with her latest win coming on good-to-firm ground, the drying conditions should be in her favour

A wide-margin winner at Newton Abbot in May, Sizing Cusimano completes the line-up He hasn’t been in the same form over hurdles on his last two starts, when finding it difficult to fend off the opposition from the front.

A novice hurdle winner for the same stable back in February 2019, Soldier Of Love runs for Fergal O’Brien, having left Paul Nicholls’ yard, following his second place at Worcester in June A five-time winner for the champion trainer over fences, he is another who enjoys a sound surface.

Later on the card, the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Handicap Chase looks a more competitive affair. The weights are headed by Emma Lavelle’s Irish Prophecy, who is now 5lbs lower than when third in the corresponding race last year He travelled well 12 months ago and won the Desert Orchid Silver Cup just two starts later, at Wincanton. He hasn’t been in the best of form since, but should strip fitter for last month’s reappearance at Worcester.

Bbold finished just one place in front of him on that occasion and that race is a key piece of form, with four horses from it re-opposing. A winner of a novices’ hurdle at this fixture in 2019 (when trained by Dan Skelton), his two most recent chase victories have come at Southwell, latterly in May when he idled after the final fence.

Paul Ferguson Weatherbys

El Borracho is the class horse in the field and carries 12-2, with him being rated 127 (making him just eligible for this grade). Lightly-raced as a chaser, he has won three times from five starts over fences, winning in good style at Kelso a year ago The seven-year-old has been hurdling since and showed a determined attitude to win at Sedgefield earlier this month. The runner-up advertised that form when winning last week and with Toby Wynne taking 7lbs off, he sets the standard.

Weatherbys sponsor two of today’s seven races, starting with the Jumpers To Follow Handicap Chase, a 0-125 class 3 contest over an extended 2m. Unfortunately, only three go to post.

Fanzio has failed to complete on two of his last three starts and arrives here on the back of a break, whilst Ragamuffin has been the model of consistency over fences, finishing first or second on all seven chase starts. He didn’t jump particularly fluently when runner-up at this track on debut in May, but has won three times since and is clearly in very good heart.

Little Bruce is another who ran well last time, when runner-up at Uttoxeter, on what was his best effort in four starts since joining Charlie Longsdon. However, he hasn’t won since landing the North Yorkshire Grand National at Catterick in January 2020, when trained by Philip Kirby.
