RoR PARADE 12.25PM - 12.40PM A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.25pm. The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR).

Today’s parade features a host of familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including Gold Cup winner Coneygree, Grand National winner Pineau De Re and leading sprinter, Limato.

Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing.

The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows, RoR: • Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities; • Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses; • Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing.

• Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care.

In non-Covid affected times, RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horse ball.

BARBERS SHOP KATIE JERRAM-HUNNABLE 20-year-old by Saddlers’ Hall, formerly trained by Nicky Henderson Breeder – Queen Elizabeth Bred by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Barbers Shop raced in The Queen’s colours with distinction. An eight-time winner, he was also placed in a King George and a Hennessy. Since his retirement from racing in 2012, he has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable and under her care he became one of the leading former racehorses to compete in showing classes. Among his many successes was being crowned champion at Hickstead and three times winner and champion at Royal Windsor Horse Show. He is now retired from competitive showing.

CONEYGREE RIDDEN BY SARA BRADSTOCK 15-year-old by Karinga Bay, formerly trained by Mark Bradstock Breeder - Lord Oaksey Winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Coneygree was retired from racing in February 2019. He has adapted quickly to a life outside of racing and since being re-trained by Mark Bradstock’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won RoR showing classes and qualified for The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree. Sara and Coneygree’s ambition for 2022 is to repeat the feat of qualifying for the Tattersalls RoR Show Series Final at Hickstead in June.

LIMATO RIDDEN BY ELLIE GREENHALGH 10-year-old by Tagula, formerly trained by Henry Candy Breeder – Seamus Phelan A top-class sprinter and winner of 14 of his 33 races for Henry Candy, including the Group 1 July Cup, Limato has been with Katie JerramHunnable since he retired from racing in autumn 2020. Katie says Limato settled in quickly and is a real character. Last year Limato took part in RoR showing classes and had some good results at the Southern Show and the Sports Horse Show before ending with a win at the West Wiltshire Show, much to the delight of his owner Paul Jacobs.

MIKO DE BEAUCHENE RIDDEN BY TRACEY PHILLIPS 22-year-old by Nashamaa, formerly trained by Venetia Williams Breeder - Raymond Bellanger Miko de Beauchene’s racing highlight was winning the Welsh National in 2007 when trained by Robert and Sally Alner, he then went to Venetia Williams before retiring in 2013. Miko was then entrusted to Tracey Philips by owner Andrew Wiles, who still is very much involved with the horse. Miko competes in RoR classes, shows under side-saddle, loves hunter trials and following the North Cotswold Hounds. Tracey says “I am very privileged to have been associated with Miko during his pre-training, his racing career, and now during his retirement. He is a very special horse.”

PINEAU DE RE RIDDEN BY LIZZIE BRUNT 19-year-old gelding by Maresca Sorrento, formerly trained by Dr Richard Newland Breeder – Michel Hardy Winner of the 2014 Grand National, Pineau De Re retired from racing in 2016. Since then, he and Lizzie Brunt have formed a successful partnership. In Eventing they compete at BE Novice level and in dressage they qualified for the RoR Southern Dressage Championships at Blenheim. Lizzie says Pineau loves jumping, adding: “He is very keen into a fence and he reads the combinations before his rider! He is so intelligent, by far the brightest horse I’ve ever ridden. I think this helped him win the National, along with his huge heart.”

SMAD PLACE RIDDEN BY SARAH HOLDEN 15-year-old gelding by Smadoun, formerly trained by Alan King Breeder – Eric Aubtee & Mme Maryse Aubree Winner of the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup, Smad Place was entrusted to Sarah Holden in 2019, although he is still owned by his wonderfully supportive owner, Mrs Peter Andrews. After a slow start due to Sarah having baby and then Covid, the pair have recently cemented their partnership and they have been out to some local unaffiliated dressage events and had fun cross-country schooling. The plan is to continue doing dressage over the winter months and then to do more RoR events, including racecourse parades and competitions affiliated to RoR.

THOMAS CRAPPER RIDDEN BY JO DAY 15-year-old gelding by Tamure, formerly trained by Robin Dickin Breeder - Mrs. J A Carr-Evans Thomas Crapper, known as 'Crappy', was purchased as a foal by Robin Dickin’s wife Claire. From a young age he had a strong character; Crappy knows exactly what he wants, he hates the snow, but he loves hunting and the solarium. Since retiring, Harriet Dickin has retrained him for hunting and showing, winning two classes at The Jockey Club RoR National Championships. Jo Day, who works at the yard, does some showing on him and regularly takes him on fun rides. Harriet says “Thomas Crapper will spend the rest of his life at Robin Dickin Racing, we owe him so much.”

UN TEMPS POUR TOUT RIDDEN BY CLARE POOL 13-year-old gelding by Robin Des Champs, formerly trained by David Pipe Breeder – Felix Talbot A dual Cheltenham Festival winner, Un Temps Pour Tout has been in the care of Clare Poole since 2019. Although sensitive in his nature, once trust was established there has been no looking back. Clare says: “Tompy has been an absolute pleasure to retrain, he always gives his all and is thoroughly enjoying his showjumping and our goal is to qualify for the British Showjumping Amateur Championships at Aintree next year”.

His owners Caroline Tisdall and Bryan Drew have followed his progress every step of the way.

After switching to Dan Skelton, Allmankind got off to the best possible start, with three successes in a row.

In last years race he was sent off the hot favourite. Despite not jumping fluently, Allmankind was never in any danger and his three rivals on the day were no match.

The six-year-old had stormed into a five-length lead two out, before staying on strongly in the straight to extend his advantage and win comfortably. Since that victory, Allmankind has gone on to win at Ayr (Grade 2) and the Old Roan Chase (Grade 2) at Aintree in October.
