HOW TO
PLACE A BET Place Your Bets.... Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2. There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks. Bet In Two Ways 1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service. You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides.
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY. The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular one mile race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75. Race Description This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies which have been rated from 71 to 90. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. COMMANCHE FALLS is a long time without a victory but has slipped to an attractive mark and could prove the way to go on the back of his good recent Ripon third. The Good Biscuit is feared most as he bids for a fourth success in his last five outings, while Fivethousandtoone and Dark Cloud Rising can both have a say too if things drop right for them.

Race Description This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. Race Description This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
