STEVE (SAM) KELSEY (1963-2026) For some 42-years, Steve Kelsey was reliable and highly valued member of the ground staff, and for much of that time led the team as the Head Groundsman. Under Steve’s supervision, the Thirsk grounds team developed a well-deserved reputation for producing fair and safe ground for racing, hence Thirsk Racecourse has always done well for runners. Much of that reputation is thanks to Steve’s own hard work, dedication and commitment over all those years. Steve retired from Thirsk Racecourse in 2023 and, sadly, recently passed away following a spell of ill health, which he faced with his typical courage and stoicism. His loss is keenly felt by the team here at Thirsk, of which he was a most valued member for so long. RIP Steve.

The Patrick Hibbert-Foy Memorial Nursery Handicap Stakes remembers a much-missed former director and chairman of Thirsk Racecourse. Patrick gave most of his working life to horseracing. He took up his first racing appointment as a Jockey Club official in 1971 and ascended the hierarchy, becoming British racing’s senior professional steward in 1994.

It was Thirsk’s good fortune that once Patrick finally retired from all stewarding commitments he agreed to become a director here at Thirsk Racecourse. He joined the Thirsk Board in 2013, remaining a director until his death in 2019, and for 4 of those years Patrick also served as Chairman.
