Place Your Bets
Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2. There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.
1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service. You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides.
1. Horse’s Saddlecloth No 2. Owners Silks/Colours 3. Horse’s Name 4. Colour of horse
B = Bay Br = Brown
Ch = Chestnut Gr = Grey 5. Sex of horse
c = colt g = gelding f = filly m = mare 6. Sire
Country 8. Days since last ran 9. Dam
Age 10. Weight St Lbs
Draw 12. Previous Performances / = denotes new season
, = denotes new year
C = Course Winner
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two betsTO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
Can be given little or no chance.

Race Description A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular seven furlong race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65.

Race Description This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

STRONG JOHNSON shaped well with a view to dropping back in trip over 6f here on his penultimate outing and was left with little chance given his track position at York last time, so is given another chance to build on that promise. Albegone has to be respected after a good effort over C&D at the weekend, whilst the generally progressive 3-y-o Law of Average is also hard to discount.

Race Description This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

QUIETNESS is improving all the time, pulling clear with a handicap debutant from a top yard despite failing to keep straight under pressure at Sandown, and she could be the way to go back up in trip. It’s easy to see Optician going well again, while Saratoga Gold can also feature.

Race Description This race is a six furlongs classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50. Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival
