HOW TO PLACE A BET
Place Your Bets
Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2. There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.
Bet In Two Ways -
1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service. You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides.
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two betsTO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 52. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

The Patrick Hibbert-Foy Memorial Nursery Handicap Stakes
The Patrick Hibbert-Foy Memorial Nursery Handicap Stakes remembers a much-missed former director and chairman of Thirsk Racecourse.
Patrick gave most of his working life to horseracing. He took up his first racing appointment as a Jockey Club official in 1971 and ascended the hierarchy, becoming British racing’s senior professional steward in 1994.
It was Thirsk’s good fortune that once Patrick finally retired from all stewarding commitments he agreed to become a director here at Thirsk Racecourse. He joined the Thirsk Board in 2013, remaining a director until his death in 2019, and for 4 of those years Patrick also served as Chairman.

Race Description A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular six furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65.

FOREVER EIGHTEEN was only narrowly denied at Newcastle last week and Nigel Tinkler’s gelding is fancied to make amends from an unchanged mark. Macarone was well found in the market when shedding his maiden tag at Beverley last time and is the obvious threat to the selection, with Uwaittillplaytime perhaps most appealing of the nursery newcomers.

Race Description Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions

CAPTAIN DANDY broke on terms when a close sixth at Newcastle last week and he’s fancied to go well again from an advantageous draw. Wrenegade Lad has failed to see his race out over 7f on his last 2 outings but has threatened to play a part in the finish on both occasions, and though not ideally drawn, he’s a player dropping back in trip, with Glory Hallelujah a modest pick to complete the placings if able to recapture August’s form.

Race Description This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of six furlongs

There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds and upwards in this race are still light on experience
Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

MEZZO SOPRANO was an expensive buy last year and looked a promisng sort when making a winning debut nearly 2 weeks ago. She has a penalty, but still looks the obvious one. Candy Eye looks the probable danger but returns from a 9-month lay-off. Midream is narrowly the more interesting of the newcomers.

Race Description This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 70 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 65.

MEASURED MOMENTS did well to get as close as she did after blowing the start when runner-up at Sandown last month and having won her prior outing at Leicester, she’s fancied to continue her fine vein of form. Victoria Falls beat a good yardstick in decisive fashion at Newmarket and also makes plenty of appeal, with Purple Gown another to consider after her fine effort at Hamilton.

BETTING WITH BOOKMAKERS
Customers of the bookmakers should check their itemised tickets upon receipt as mistakes cannot be rectified after the “off”. Customers are reminded to retain all betting tickets until after “Weighed-in” has been announced, as payment will only be made on production of the original ticket. Bookmakers are not obliged to pay out until ‘Weighed in’ is announced, nor to remain on the course more than five minutes after that announcement. Tickets remain valid for one month.
VENUE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)
Race Description This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 49 to 68. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
