THE BRESBET: BACK TO BOOKMAKING NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)
Race Description A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular one mile race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75.

Today marks the retirement of Mal from sponsoring races on behalf of the highly successful salon in Bedale, Personal Touches.

It has been a privilege and pleasure to have awarded so many prizes to the owners, trainers and jockeys and also the groomers over the years.
Personal Touches has sponsored a lot of races sometimes more than one on a race day, now it is time to thank the staff at Thirsk race course and CGC Event Catering for the love and care they have afforded me and my party over the years, and to wish everyone a very happy and successful day of racing.
Thirsk racecourse is and will always be my favourite venue, and I leave with many memories of some very lucrative winnings, some very stylish riding and some exquisite horses. Good luck, and goodbye! Mal xx

Race Description This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Race Description This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

THE BRITISH EBF 40TH ANNIVERSARY FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)
for three yrs old and upwards fillies and mares ¨ Total prize fund £20000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £8126, 2nd £4064, 3rd £2032, 4th £1016, 5th £508, 6th £254. (Penalty Value £10308) Weights raised 2lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable.
Race Description This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed.A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

PLAY SMARTER
ORIGINTRIAL didn’t get the rub of the green for a second start in a row when runner-up at Ripon 11 days ago, having repeatedly met trouble from 2f out, and is surely up to gaining compensation providing she gets the breaks. Zapphire got the better of a nexttime-out winner at Haydock last month and seems highly likely to go well again, while a break is unlikely to have done Wild Side any harm.

HAMBLETON CUP HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)
Race Description This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

None of these can be ruled out but VAYNOR figures on an attractive mark and is worth forgiving his latest Newbury fifth when possibly finding the race coming too soon so edges the vote. Shake A Leg is also weighted to go well so is firmly in the picture, with Knockbrex and Dubai Welcome also well in the mix in an open handicap.

Race Description This is a one mile and six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70.
