Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2. There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.
1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service. You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides.
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two betsTO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description This contest is a Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

Race Description This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 51 to 70. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

I am dedicating this race to the memory of my beloved late husband.
We were together for over thirty years and his love of horse racing began before we met, as did his love of North Yorkshire, and as my family originates from Northallerton, it was a match made in heaven.
David was stationed at Catterick Garrison in the early sixties, The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, so tonight’s meeting is very special and our memorial race chosen to be here on this date for that reason.
A further reason that Thirsk Racecourse is dear to my heart is that between 1997 and 1999 we were very privileged to have the use of Burtree Racing Stables and together with our talented trainer Mark Peill, enjoyed modest success with David’s racehorses.
The first of David’s winners was ‘Marbleman’ named after the marble importing and fireplace manufacturing business we ran together.
Marbleman won several races at Kelso, Carlisle, Sedgefield and Mussleburgh. Another of David’s horses ‘He’s Got Wings’ won at Southwell and Nottingham but the horse that meant the most to Davis was ‘David’s Way’ who won only once at Worcester coming from behind to achieve a magnificent victory.
Our days at Burtree were some of the happiest days of our lives.
Although David cannot be here tonight in person, we know his spirit will be standing beside me enjoying once again the thrill of watching beautiful thoroughbreds competing on one of the prettiest racecourses in the country.

Race Description This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65.To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.

Race Description This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

Race Description This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 51 to 70. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

Race Description This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.
