MONDAY SEPTEMBER 12 TH 2022

Her Majesty’s last winner at Thirsk was TOPICAL, on 20th August 2018. Her Majesty’s final runner at Thirsk was FRESH FANCY, on 31st May this year.

Her Majesty had a life-long passion for horseracing, and it has been Thirsk’s great privilege to have witnessed her horses racing, and sometimes winning on our North Yorkshire turf.

Everyone at Thirsk Racecourse is deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen, and we join the whole country in extending our sincere condolences to His Majesty The King and the other members of the Royal Family.

There will be a 2-minutes silence held at approximately 1.30pm today, in tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Race Description This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 52. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

FEN TIGER has been at the top of his game lately and might prove the answer to this tricky opener. Army of One wasn’t seen to best effect at Ffos Las last time and had been performing well prior to that so she’s feared most. Eminent Angel is a possible improver now handicapping and a market move for her would look interesting taking on largely much more exposed opposition.

Andrea’s family have sponsored a race here today at Thirsk as a surprise for her. Andrea has loved horses and especially horse racing since she was very young. She has travelled to various racecourses across the UK and Ireland. Her favourite is Newmarket (after Thirsk of course).

Lots of love from Mam, Karen, Mark and Andy. xx

We hope Andrea has a beautiful day today with her family here at Thirsk.

Today is a special day because Andrea Taylor celebrates her 50th Birthday.

The Patrick Hibbert-Foy Memorial

The Patrick Hibbert Foy Memorial Nursery Handicap Stakes remembers a much missed former director and chairman of Thirsk Racecourse.

Nursery Handicap Stakes

Patrick gave most of his working life to horseracing. He took up his first racing appointment as a Jockey Club official in 1971 and ascended the hierarchy, becoming British racing’s senior professional steward in 1994. It was Thirsk’s good fortune that once Patrick finally retired from all stewarding commitments he agreed to become a director here at Thirsk Racecourse. He joined the Thirsk Board in 2013, remaining a director until his death in 2019, and for 4 of those years Patrick also served as Chairman.

Connor Beasley Michael Dods, Darlington Beechwood Grange Stud S impressive too strong on nursery debut at Ayr (6f) 9-8 (20)

Race Description A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular six furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65.

Race Description

Longest Traveller: TABARETTA trained by C Appleby, Newmarket, 185 miles.

B Mountarmstrong Stud

This seven furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

Race This is a six furlongs handicap race for three, four, five and six-years-old only which have been rated from 46 to 55. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.

Race Description This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of five furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

Race This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 51 to 70. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

Race Description This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
