BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This race is a six furlongs classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50. Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to a lower rated rival. Race Stats Leading course trainer (17-22): D O’Meara (34 wins from 260 runners, 13%) runs HARD SOLUTION Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Appleby (7 wins from 41 runners, 17%) runs MOPS GEM Longest Traveller: PYRRHOS trained by M Hunt, Bridgwater, 269 miles.

PLAY SMARTER

MR ORANGE hasn’t been at his best this term, including at Pontefract, where he goes particularly well, but he takes a handy drop in grade here and could be the way to go in a race where plenty have something to prove. Torious, Hard Solution and Sharrabang head up the dangers.

Race Description A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular seven furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65. Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (37 wins from 469 runners, 8%) runs STREETWISE GIRL and UNKNOWN ANGEL Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D Evans (10 wins from 21 runners, 48%) runs ON THE PULSE Longest Traveller: ON THE PULSE trained by D Evans, Abergavenny, 226 miles.

If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every meeting to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates! As you enjoy your evening, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

23

EIGHTH RACE

Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers or the cold water buckets provided in the parade ring and at every start.

SEVENTH RACE

Looking after the horses is a priority at Thirsk and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses Thirsk will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and does not mean it is bad news.

Race Description This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far.The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 55. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70. Leading course trainer (17-22): D O’Meara (34 wins from 260 runners, 13%) runs GLORY AND HONOUR Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (6 wins from 58 runners, 10%) runs GLORY AND HONOUR Weightwatcher: GLAN Y GORS won off a handicap mark of 75, his rating is now down 20lb to 55. Longest Traveller: ARMY OF ONE trained by Mitchell Hunt, Bridgwater, 269 miles.
