HOW TO
PLACE A BET Place Your Bets.... Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2. There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks. Bet In Two Ways 1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service. You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides.
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY. The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (36 wins from 451 runners, 8%) runs EYE KNEE Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (10 wins from 102 runners, 10%) runs EYE KNEE Weightwatcher: CARLOS FELIX won off a handicap mark of 78, his rating is now down 8lb to 70. BAAEED extended his unbeaten run with no difficulty when slamming Real World by 3 1/4 lengths in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on his return last month, producing the sort of performance rarely seen at this trip in Britain since the days of Frankel, so he’s very hard to a oppose in a race of similar quality. Race Description This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75. PLAY SMARTER
The vote goes to LOVELY MANA, who pulled nicely clear of the rest when just touched off at Windsor last week and makes plenty of appeal off the same mark. Huddle Up is likely to come good for his new connections sooner rather than later and is next on the list ahead of Spartan Fighter, who returns to turf on a potentially favourable mark.

PLAY SMARTER
Aidan O’Brien has won this a record 9 times and holds a strong hand once again with BLACKBEARD and Age of Kings, who both looked smart prospects when scoring last-time out. The latter was very strong at the finish at the Curragh 2 weeks ago but Blackbeard seems to have more natural pace having displayed an impressive turn of foot in the Marble Hill Stakes there, so gets the vote. Persian Force looks best of the home team, with Bradsell, Remarkable Force and Royal Scotsman also worth a mention.

Peter Fairhurst 1955 - 2020 Peter died after a short illness in May 2020. He was a typical hard working northern family man who was taken from us ahead of his time. Sadly missed by his partner Lorraine, son Brian, 3 grandchildren, 3 brothers and many friends. Peter enjoyed most sports and attended many live sporting events. Apart from last year we have attended this fixture at Thirsk for the last 10 years as a lads day out. He would have enjoyed nothing better than being with us today and we will raise our glasses today to celebrate his life.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE
Race Description This contest is another novice stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

POSITIVE IMPACT looked an unlucky loser at Leicester last time and is taken to make amends with further improvement on the cards. Bay of Honour justified good support in the manner of a useful prospect at Kempton in October, so is considered a big danger, while King’s Crusader is shaping up well and can’t be taken lightly, either.

PLAY SMARTER
GOLDEN PAL failed to fire when only seventh in last season’s Nunthorpe at York but Wesley Ward’s US colt is unbeaten since and well worth another chance to prove himself a top sprinter on these shores. Australian-challenger Nature Strip has the form to play a leading role too and could prove his biggest threat, with Twilight Calls and Man of Promise appealing as the pick of the home challenge.

CARING FOR THE HORSE AT THIRSK Looking after the horses is a priority at Thirsk and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses Thirsk will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and does not mean it is bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers or the cold water buckets provided in the parade ring and at every start. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every meeting to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates! As you enjoy your evening, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE
Race Description This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (36 wins from 451 runners, 8%) runs OBEE JO & PARYS MOUNTAIN Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (10 wins from 102 runners, 10%) runs OBEE JO & PARYS MOUNTAIN Longest Traveller: TARRABB trained by O Burrows, Lambourn, 222 miles. A very intriguing renewal, featuring more unknown quantities than is sometimes the case. That said COROEBUS sets a very high standard on his win in what looks a strong renewal of the 2000 Guineas so the likes of William Haggas pair My Prospero and Maljoom and the Gosdens’ Mighty Ulysses, who all have the potential to make their mark at the highest level, will need to take another sizeable step forward to trouble Charlie Appleby’s charge.

Unsurprisingly a host arrive with claims, including last year’s winner RESHOUN. Operating from the same mark, he warmed up for this with an encouraging fifth over shorter at Haydock last month and, with the cheekpieces/return to further both obvious positives, Ian Williams’ charge is fancied to make a bold bid to follow up. Irish-raiders Pied Piper and Bring On The NIght are both fascinating contenders and feared, along with Coltrane and Aracdian Sunrise.

Race Description This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage. Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (36 wins from 451 runners, 8%) runs LOST MY SOCK Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (10 wins from 102 runners, 10%) runs LOST MY SOCK Longest Traveller: RAMBUSO CREEK trained by K Ryan, Hambleton, 93 miles.

PLAY SMARTER
This looks very open. FOXES TALES was able to negotiate a wide stall when landing a C&D handicap at this meeting in 2021 so he’s chanced despite being drawn in 16. He seemingly didn’t quite stay 1 1/2m at Newbury last time and had finished in front of last year’s winner Juan Elcano, who should go well again, when a creditable second on his reappearance at Sandown. Harrovian and the reappearing Tasman Bay are others to consider.

PLAY SMARTER
The Gosdens saddled the winner of this last year and STOWELL could be another for the yard. He was a fine third in the C&D Queen’s Vase at this meeting 12 months ago (sole previous attempt at this trip) and has shown enough in Group 3/Listed company this year to suggest that this mark will be within reach now pitched into a handicap. Chester Cup winner Cleveland probably has more to offer and is greatly respected, while Juan de Montalban, Okita Soushi and Platinumcard are others to consider.

G N I C RAEEDS N OU Y TheGamblingActreview Email your MP in less than a minute - we can all make a difference! We absolutely support the objectives of protecting vulnerable individuals from gambling-related harm, but it is imperative that any new legislation is proportionate, targeted and evidence-based and will not result in any unintended economic consequences to British horse racing. As a supporter of horseracing, we urge you to make your MP aware that you do not want any future gambling regulation to affect your civil liberties and freedom to choose how you spend your time and money enjoying horseracing. Potential measures could include affordability checks and limits on how much you can stake and deposit.
Simply: 1. Visit racingtv.eaction.org.uk/GamblingReview 2. Enter your postcode to find your MP 3. Put your name to a prepared letter The process is straightforward and will take less than a minute to complete, but could make a real difference to the future of the sport.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN SUPPORTING THE SPORT
