HOW TO
PLACE A BET Place Your Bets.... Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2. There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks. Bet In Two Ways 1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service. You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides.
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY. The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

PLAY SMARTER
NOOR BANO produced a promising first effort when third here 17 days ago and that form has been boosted since with the winner following up in a listed event at Sandown. King’s Crown looks worth a try over this extra 1f judged on his second at York 3 weeks ago, while the market should provide clues regarding the newcomers.

Race Description This is a one mile four furlong handicap race for fillies’ and mares, three-year-olds and upwards who have been rated from 51-70. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in- a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered in a race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. MANIGORDO doesn’t have the best of strike-rates but he’s a classy sort for a 0-75 and, having run well at Ripon last time, may be able to get his head back in front returned to the scene of his win last spring. Kapono was successful off a 3lb higher mark on the sole previous occasion he was partnered by Danny Tudhope so a market move for him would be interesting. Dream Together is in good form, while the fact Ruth Carr has won this twice since 2017 means Rhythm can’t be discounted.

Race Description The aim of a handicap is to ensure a level playing field for all and this is achieved by allocating different weights to each of the runners based on what they have achieved on the racecourse so far. Each runner is given a rating usually ranging from around 30 at the lower end of the scale to roughly 130 for the Derby winner. This particular six furlong handicap has been designed for three-year-olds which have been rated between 46 and 65. Race Description This Novice Stakes, is run over a distance of 7 furlongs 218 yards for fillies and mares. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds and upwards in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every meeting to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates! As you enjoy your evening, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

EIGHTH RACE
Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers or the cold water buckets provided in the parade ring and at every start.
SEVENTH RACE
Looking after the horses is a priority at Thirsk and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses Thirsk will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and does not mean it is bad news.

Race Description This is a seven furlongs and 218 yard handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered in race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (36 wins from 449 runners, 8%) runs JUST HISS Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (8 wins from 56 runners, 14%) runs SAFRAN Weightwatcher: JUST HISS won off a handicap mark of 82, his rating is now down 18lb to 64.
