@THIRSKRACES
The Chairman & Directors of Thirsk Racecourse would like to thank the following for their generous sponsorship this after afternoon.
HOW TO
PLACE A BET Place Your Bets.... Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2. There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks. Bet In Two Ways 1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service. You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides.
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY. The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 650. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far.The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Race Description
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55.

TWELFTH KNIGHT was held back by inexperience but still showed plenty to work on when third in a 4-runner Lingfield novice (6f) on debut in March (well backed). Race Description This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 51 to 70. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. Race Description This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage. Race Stats

Race Description This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career. This could rest between the penalised winners, with WOTEVER NEXT taken to improve past War of Words and remain unbeaten. CARING FOR THE HORSE AT THIRSK Looking after the horses is a priority at Thirsk and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses Thirsk will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and does not mean it is bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers or the cold water buckets provided in the parade ring and at every start. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every meeting to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates! As you enjoy your evening, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

ABANDONMENT REFUND - In the event of racing being abandoned after the first race has been run, no refunds will be made in respect of admission or car park charges and emergency admission tickets will be invalid. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY AT ALL BRITISH RACECOURSES - Admission to the racecourse is subject to the right of the Racecourse Executive to refuse admission to or expel any racegoer whose behaviour is considered by it to constitute or to be likely to lead to unruly behaviour. Any instance of unruly behaviour, such as drunkenness, abusive conduct, singing or shouting, shall entitle the Racecourse Executive to expel the offending racegoer without prior notice. It is forbidden to take drink or food into racecourse enclosures, other than picnic areas. Racegoers must abide by any regulations, including the observance of designated no-drinking areas and standards of dress. DRESS CODE - Please note that Thirsk Racecourse has a new Premier Enclosure dress code. Racegoers are respectfully informed that in the Thirsk Premier Enclosure smart casual attire is a requirement. Gentlemen are required to wear a shirt with a collar, smart long trousers and shoes; jackets and ties are not mandatory, but are encouraged. The following items of dress will not be permitted – any items of sportswear, fancy dress, short trousers, ripped or torn garments, mottle-dyed denim, trainers, plimsolls, or any other items that, in the opinion of the management, are not in keeping with the Code or may cause offence to other racegoers. Anyone in breach of this dress code will be asked to leave the Premier Enclosure until such time as they are correctly dressed. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES - Whilst we always endeavour to take appropriate steps to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is therefore important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. We employ Safety Officials whose job it is to ensure your safety. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and the Officials will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and
proceed out of the enclosures quickly and quietly under their guidance. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. It may give you some peace of mind if you pre-plan and agree a meeting place with your party, just in case you become separated. If we are unable to re-occupy the Stands for any reason, you will be advised immediately, and, if it is considered safe to do so, you will be invited to return to your car or coach. The departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. These are precautionary arrangements which we trust will not be required. However, in the event of an emergency please remember: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU AND UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE OFFICIALS PROCEED QUICKLY AND QUIETLY TO THE SAFE AREA, THEN TO YOUR AGREED RENDEZVOUS POINT OR TO YOUR CAR OR COACH. MANAGEMENT RIGHTS - The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing. NOTICES - Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of Races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. NO SMOKING - There is now a No Smoking Policy at Thirsk Racecourse. Would all racegoers please note that smoking is banned in all enclosed or substantially enclosed premises. Please respect the No Smoking signs. PUBLIC NOTICE - No person under 18 years of age will be served or allowed to consume alcohol on these premises. ZERO TOLERANCE - We want our visitors to be able to make the most of the racing experience at Thirsk, and ask all racegoers to ensure that their actions, whether in bars or in open areas, do not affect the enjoyment of others. In instances where groups or individuals demonstrate behaviour which is considered likely to be unacceptable to the majority, they will be ejected from the course without question. We thank you in anticipation for your co-operation in helping us to maintain a safe and secure environment in which everyone can enjoy racing at its best.
