Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

★★★★★ Selected to win the race

★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed.

13. Breeder 14. Trainer 15. Jockey 16. Sponsor 15

★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

BHA Ratings Explained

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

Race Description

This is a three mile handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

This particular two miles and half a furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than one hurdle race. This is a two miles and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

Though SAINT BIBIANA isn’t the biggest and was beaten a fair way on chase debut at Southwell, it’s reasonable to expect the 8-y-o to step up on that given that she was returning from a 7-month absence and this mark is a good one judged on her hurdles exploits last summer Another Day Out is unproven over this far and hasn’t put her best foot forward the last twice but she’s a big threat nonetheless, while Spotty Dog, for all his foibles, will have a real chance granted a clean round of jumping.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly. 2024: SEYMOUR PROMISE (IRE) 8 10 4 Harry Kimber 10-1 (Joe Tizzard) 12 ran Blinkers worn first time by No. 7. Tongue Strap worn first time by No. 1. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn first time by No. 6. Hood worn by No. 2. Visor worn by No. 1. Tongue Strap worn by No. 3, 5. Stewards Note: SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL: Following its run on 12/3/2025 it was reported that the horse was found to have bled.

Probable S.P’s: 10-11 Bumpy Evans (IRE), 9-2 Unspeakable (IRE), 7-1 Dreamsundermyfeet (IRE), 10-1 Firefly Lane (IRE), 11-1 School For Scandal (FR), 40-1 Game Line (IRE), 50-1 McGregors Charge (GB)

This looks between UNSPEAKABLE and Bumpy Evans. The latter is bound to be a warm order on the back of victories at Leicester and Ffos Las but this quick turnaround is reason enough to take him on. Unspeakable is just 1-18 under Rules but he’s on workable mark and has shown enough on his last three starts to suggest that he has a race in him off this sort of mark. Dreamsundermyfeet has become disappointing and needs to get back on track now equipped with blinkers.

Race Description

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles and half a furlong.

DECLARED RUNNERS 9

2024: JENA D’OUDAIRIES (FR) 5 10 6 Freddie Gingell 6-5 (Paul Nicholls) 8 ran Blinkers worn first time by No. 3. Tongue Strap worn by No. 1. Stewards Note: CALVINO: Following its run on 20/3/2025 it was reported that the horse stopped quickly.

Probable S.P’s: 8-11 Big Boy Barney (IRE), 11-4 Calvino (IRE), 11-1 Lootenay (FR), 33-1 Daring To Dream (GB), She’s Our Last (GB), 50-1 Play Nice (GB), 100-1 Ilostasock (IRE), Ivegotattitude (GB), 150-1 Olivia’s Secret (IRE)

This looks a good chance for BIG BOY BARNEY to build on a promising run at Warwick last month. Calvino disappointed back from a break at Chepstow but hails from a top yard and might still be the one to give Fergal O’Brien’s charge most to do.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly. And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.
