★★★★★ Selected to win the race

★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed.

13. Breeder 14. Trainer 15. Jockey 16. Sponsor 15

★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

BHA Ratings Explained

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet. If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Dan Skelton won this race with Spiritofthegames back in 2017 and relies on six-year-old mare Manala here. She showed plenty of promise when runner-up in a Newton Abbott bumper for Nicky Henderson in 2023 but has finished down the field in two hurdles starts this year since switching stables. Race Description

This is a two mile and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description

This is a two mile, five and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

Race Description

This is a three mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

BADBURY RINGS got the job done with far more in hand than the bare margin implies at Wincanton 12 days ago and surely has further progress and wins in him on that evidence. Salley Gardens and Drash On Ruby are feared most in that order

Freda Webber was born in Brent Knoll on 27 February 1944.

She became friends with Anita Slade, even before they went to Brent Knoll primary school, and remained so for over 75 years. She married Bob Woolley in July 1965, three weeks after attending Anita’s marriage to Tony Motture (in the same church).

She brought up a daughter, Karen and a son Christopher and had 3 grandchildren.

Her full and active life included passionate interest in a wide range of subjects, particularly the history of Somerset.

She died suddenly and unexpectedly on 24 September 2024.

Freda is remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and lifelong friend.

The Freda Woolley Memorial Mares’ Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 4)

(Challenger Mares’ Series Qualifier) (GBB Race)

for five yrs old and upwards mares x Total prize fund £13300 Owners Prize Money. 1st £5372, 2nd £2685, 3rd £1343, 4th £672, 5th £335. (Penalty Value £7023.73)

Race Description

This two mile and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Race Description

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles and half a furlong.
