14. Trainer
15. Jockey

★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

As the title suggests, junior races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the ranks of the more established horses. This race differs slightly from a standard junior event in that it is restricted to horses that have been specifically bred for National Hunt racing and therefore horses that have previously run on the Flat are barred from taking part. This two miles and 104 yards hurdle race is for four-year-olds.

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and 104 yards race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.
A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

This is a two miles and 104 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

JUST OVER LAND was in a different parish to his four rivals at Lingfield last month and, with the possibility of better to come, a 10lb rise is unlikely to be enough to prevent him from going in again. Irish-import Ca Plane Pour Moi shaped better than the bare result at Leopardstown during the Christmas period and he could be a factor on debut for his new yard. This is a three miles, four furlongs and 85 yards handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

The Venetia Williams yard endured something of a blip during the time of LASKALIN’s poor effort in the Royal Artillery at Sandown, but the winners have been flowing again of late and the 9-y-o had shaped as though coming to hand when fourth over a trip similar to this at Lingfield previously. His proven stamina will count for plenty and the Williams yard saddled the winner of this race last year Broken Halo is feared most given doubts surrounding First Lord De Cuet stamina-wise.

This is a two miles, seven furlongs and 198 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

This two miles, three furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER
SOLAR SYSTEM caught the eye under a patient ride when fourth in a recent novice here and can build on it to get off the mark now going handicapping off an attractive mark. Also making a bow in this sphere, Getmetothemoon looks a likely improver and is next on the list, although in-form maidens Whynotnowroy and Talimar Pearl can both have a say too in this open contest.
