Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

★★★★★ Selected to win the race

★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed.

15

13. Breeder

14. Trainer

15. Jockey

16. Sponsor

★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Ratings Explained

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

Race Description

1

2m 3f 1y

This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description

2m 3f 1y

This is the second division of Race 1. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.

Horse Welfare

A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy Please do not assume the worst. Race Description

2m 3f 1y

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and three furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

This is a two miles and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105.

Race Description

2m 7f 198y

This is a three miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

The penultimate race this afternoon is a two miles, five and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-120. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating.
