Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ★★★★★ Selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Ratings Explained The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

Race Description

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and three furlongs novices’ handicap hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races. Br Breeding

Race Description

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a ﬁlly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and 104 yards race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

The form reads fairly well through the third, who has won three times since, and a repeat of that effort should have him right there. The son of Yeats has yet to win since but was travelling well on the front end when falling three from home on his last start at Lingfield. He has since undergone wind surgery and holds solid claims if recovering from that fall. The top weighted Enjoy Your Life made a pleasing start to life over fences in the UK when a good second over the intermediate trip at Wincanton. Venetia Williams’ French import travelled strongly on the front end, but just didn’t have the tactical speed of the winner over that sort of trip. Up in trip on his next start at Exeter, the seven-year-old built on that initial promise with an impressive victory and won with a fair bit in hand from a mark of 114. He struggled from a 7lb higher mark back at the track, but his jumping wasn’t as fluent as it was before, and his fourth in the Grand Military Gold Cup last time can be easily excused. He has dropped back down to a mark of 118 and still looks unexposed at this trip, with Charlie Deutsch back in the saddle. WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW

The Ben Pauling yard have been in red-hot form of late, operating at a 30% strike rate over the past fortnight, and Not At Present will look to improve that even further. A four-time winner as a novice hurdler two seasons ago, he landed a Kempton handicap hurdle from a mark of 121 and arrives here on a reduced chase mark of just 115. A well-built son of Presenting, he always looked made for chasing, and recorded a promising chase debut when following home a smart Donald McCain horse in July of 2022. He would then miss plenty of time though and returned from 543 days off the track last month when falling at Newbury.

Not At Present could be very well-handicapped on his best form. Emma Lavelle’s Mumbo Jumbo finished second over course and distance here last March, and perhaps may have gone close to winning the race if not for a mistake at the second-last fence. The eight-year-old is still a maiden over fences and, a bar a good third to Enjoy Your Life at Exeter, has yet to truly fire this term. His mark has continued to slide though, and he can better than he has showed the last twice. The lightly raced Lubeat Foras is winless since landing a Sedgefield bumper for Richard Fahey back in September. The nine-year-old is now in the hands of Rebecca Curtis but will have to improve on his jumping in order to remain competitive here.

This is a two miles and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. With pretty signiﬁcant doubts surrounding the other three, AIRTOTHETHRONE and Enjoy Your Life are the pair to concentrate on. The latter has plenty going for him eased in class here but Tim Vaughan’s charge had yet to be asked for his effort when exiting at the third-last at Lingﬁeld and, provided he is none the worse for PLAY SMARTER that tumble, the 8-y-o could have the edge back at the scene of his breakthrough success last season. Raceday preview from Weatherbys A competitive field of nine go to post for the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Handicap Hurdle, an intriguing Class 3 event staged over two miles and half a furlong. Paul Nicholls has landed the contest four times since 2014 and looks to hold another strong hand in the race this year, with three runners lining up for the champion trainer. Two of his runners share top weight, Wild Max and Lallygag. The former is the mount of Angus Cheleda and has won three of his last four starts over fences. He was last seen in July of 2022 though and reverts to hurdles on the back of an almost 600-day break here. The latter was an impressive winner of a novice hurdle here at the track last season and signed off the campaign with a good third in a strong Cheltenham handicap. It is not a surprise to see the seven-yearold revert to hurdles following a couple of below-par efforts over fences this term, however the ground may be more testing than he would like. Out of the trio, Harry Cobden prefers Inca De Lafayette, who arrives here on the back of a course victory in January over the slightly longer trip. The six-year-old has looked incredibly progressive this term, winning two of his three starts, and a 4lb rise in the weights may not be enough to halt his upward trajectory. Dan Skelton’s Vicki Vale was just two lengths back in third in that Taunton contest last time, and benefits from a 2lb swing in the weights with Inca De Lafayette here. close the campaign last term, the mare should benefit from this drop back in trip as she hasn’t quite seen out her races over further this season. Also dropping back in trip is Fergal O’Brien’s Wolf Prince. The eight-year-old was well beaten after a long layoff at Doncaster last time but did place from a mark of 138 at Perth 18 months ago and runs off just 129 here. Unexposed five-year-old Into The Park makes his handicap debut here for the team of Philip Hobbs and Johnson White from an opening mark of 120. The son of Walk In The Park showed plenty of promise when third over course and distance on his penultimate start and backed that up with an impressive eight length success in a Newbury maiden hurdle last time. The fourth has since cantered to a 13-length novice hurdle victory, so the form reads positively.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Into The Park proves better than a mark of 120. Celtic Art, rated as high as 101 on the flat, won two of his first three starts over hurdles last term despite displaying plenty of greenness in his new discipline. The seven-year-old’s form tailed off towards the end of the season, but he bounced back in first-time cheekpieces to land a Lingfield handicap hurdle from a mark of 117 in November. Following two below-par efforts since, his mark has dropped to just 1lb above that last winning mark.

Horse Welfare

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Race Description

This is a two miles, seven furlongs and 198 yards handicap hurdle race for ﬁllies and mares aged four-years-old and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
