Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ★★★★★ Selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Ratings Explained The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

Race Description

Juvenile races are designed solely for three-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this two miles and one furlong hurdle race is allotted 10st 12lb (ﬁllies 10st 5lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the class of race which they won – 6lb for a Class 4 or 5 hurdle race or 10lb for a Class 1 to 3 hurdle race victory. Horse Welfare

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Race Description

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. Race Description

This two miles, seven furlongs steeple chase is another for novices’. It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards rated from 0 to 100 which have not previously won more than two steeple chases. Initially, the weights are set according to sex with ﬁllies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals before previous steeple chase winners are allocated a 7lb penalty for each race won.

Race Description

Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this two miles and 104 yards hurdle race will now have an ofﬁcial rating that makes it no longer feasible to run them in handicaps and will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. This is a two miles, seven furlongs and 198 yards handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. Race Description

This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased.
