Ladies Day Thursday 13th April 2023 Official Programme & Form Guide £3.00
How to Read the Racecard
Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Ratings Explained
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet. If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Bold Form Figures Indicate Point-to-Point Form
A Hunter Chase gives the regulars of the Point-to-Pointing world a chance to shine under National Hunt rules. A horse is only qualified for this type of event if it holds a Hunters’ Certificate, something provided by a Master of Hounds to prove that the horse has been regularly hunted throughout the season. This particular event is for five-year-olds and upwards, and is to be run over two miles and seven furlongs. All Hunter Chases are restricted to amateur jockeys.

Race Description
This is a three handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description
This is a two miles and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.
Horse Welfare
A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

WINGED LEADER is a straightforward, bold jumper who tends to go forward, all attributes that lend themselves to this sort of test, and he’s looked as good as ever in points recently, so he’s a solid option. Last year’s winner Latenightpass is set for another bold showing and Magic Saint has enough class to make his presence felt

Race Description
This is a three mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Having been given a serious chance by the handicapper, it would be no surprise were TAKE YOUR TIME to stage a revival equipped with first-time blinkers. Stablemate Jet of Magic looks a big threat judged on his solid effort in a Grade 3 Sandown handicap in February but whether he has much in hand of his current mark remains to be seen. Consequently, the selection may have most to fear from Copper Coin, who is interesting back from a break (goes well fresh), and the hat-trick seeking Hititi. TIMEFORM PREDICTION:

Race Description
This two miles and half a furlong handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles and half a furlong.

PLAY SMARTER
Runner-up on his sole start in France, JACKPOT D’ATHOU again ran with plenty of promise when third in a big-field Kempton bumper on debut for Paul Nicholls last month and a repeat should see him play a lead role once more here. Il Va de Soi similarly showed a good deal to work on himself on debut and is feared, with Geezer Rockstar and Idamix a couple of the newcomers to note.
