How to Read the Racecard

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet. If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

intriguing contest, despite the small field. CALL OF THE WILD was an early casualty on his recent introduction to this sphere at Doncaster but he looks a chasing type and, judged on his hurdles form, will have every chance of delivering here, granted a clear round. Cap du Mathan should pick up a race over fences sooner rather than later and merits respect but Robin’s Dream, who was a promising novice hurdler a couple of seasons back, could be a bigger threat if fully tuned-up for this.

The eyes are immediately drawn to RARE MIDDLETON, who showed plenty in a couple of runs on the level in Ireland for Andrew Oliver and is a potentially useful recruit to this sphere for the Paul Nicholls yard. The weight-for-age allowance he receives from the majority of these is another positive factor. Though well held both starts over hurdles to date, Bascule remains of interest given his Flat ability and Parc d’Amour isn’t written off but Moodofthemoment is preferred for forecast purposes.

When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-yearsold and upwards in this two miles and five furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today

This would appear to represent a good chance for the Paul Nicholls-trained French Flat recruit AFADIL to make a winning start over hurdles, with confidence in his chance increased should the betting vibes be strong. Danton had an excuse on hurdle debut and showed plenty of ability in a bumper prior to that so he’s the obvious one for the forecast spot.

TIMEFORMVIEWGained Second success at Fakenham (both 2 1/2m) when seeing off 5 rivals in a mares’ handicap in October Came up short from inflated mark when fourth back at that venue last time but she’s no forlorn hope in an open-looking handicap. TFRHHHII BHA85 This is a two miles and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

Horse Welfare

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.

A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
