How to Read the Racecard

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

(IRE) Selling races exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a ‘seller’ such as this two and a half miles hurdle race for four to eight-year-olds, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder The auction is often well worth seeing, so make sure to head that way after the race.

Horse Welfare

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.

A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

BRENTFORD HOPE is a talented Flat performer who showed aptitude for hurdling when second in a novice at Ludlow recently, so he’s well worth a chance to open his account at the second attempt in this sphere despite the presence of Rubaud, an easy winner over C&D last month. This is a two miles and two furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125.

is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty usually 7lb.
