Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ★★★★★ Selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Ratings Explained The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. Race Description

This is a two miles and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. Br Breeding

KOLISI showed something akin to his fairly useful Flat form when making a winning handicap debut over hurdles at Hereford on Sunday, and this 4-y-o will prove hard to beat under a penalty here with the promise of better to come. The one for the forecast could be Ascot Day, who didn’t fare badly when returning from a break at Chepstow recently. Sweet Nightingale is open to improvement now handicapping and she’s also shortlisted.

Race Description

This is the second division of Race 1. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the ofﬁcial safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

Race Description

This is a three miles handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. Race Description

This is a three miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Race Description

This two miles and two furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose ofﬁcial rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
