Race Description

This is a three miles and four and a quarter furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 140 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 135.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
