Race Description

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a ﬁlly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners in this race restricted to four to seven year-olds, in this two miles and three furlongs contest, will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

OUTLAW PETER tried to keep tabs with Constitution Hill at Sandown before fading in a ﬁrst-time tongue tie. That was probably a fair effort in the circumstances, and with a return to a longer trip here sure to suit, he can come out on top back from a break. Race Description

This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. Br Breeding

Perhaps best to focus on the 4-y-os towards the foot of the weights. RHEBUS ROAD looks on a feasible mark based on his Fontwell second when last seen in November and gets the nod. Kalzari went for home too soon over a longer trip here last time and is of interest back over shorter, while Cornicello is a potential improver on handicap debut.

Race Description

This is a two miles and five and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-old and upwards mares which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb. There is a cash machine now in operation in the foyer of the Orchard Stand.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
