Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ★★★★★ Selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Ratings Explained The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet. If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Race Description

1

This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. Br Breeding

Race Description

Juvenile races are designed solely for three-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this two miles and one furlong hurdle race is allotted 10st 12lb (fillies 10st 5lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the class of race which they won – 6lb for a Class 4 or 5 hurdle race or 10lb for a Class 1 to 3 hurdle race victory. Only a handful of these make any serious appeal, with GRAYSTONE getting the verdict to double his tally over hurdles having made all at Warwick earlier this month. Irish Hill is an interesting recruit for Paul Nicholls so he’s feared most, ahead of Brainstorm.

Race Description

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and three furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two hurdle races. Br Breeding

BRAVE KINGDOM looked a bright prospect when winning his first two starts and, although he came up short in a Grade 2 at Sandown last time, he was far from disgraced, so he’s capable of doubling his tally over hurdles back in calmer waters. Last Royal’s third at Chepstow on his last completed outing is very strong form, so he’s feared most.

Race Description

This is a two miles and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb. Race Description

Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contests. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this two miles and half a furlong hurdle race will now have an official rating that makes it no longer feasible to run them in handicaps and will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially, weight is allocated according to age, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at this level or above. These penalties range from 3lb for a handicap success to 5lb for a Class 1 weight-for-age victory. Br Breeding

Race Description

This is a three miles and two and a quarter furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95. Br Breeding

PLAY SMARTER

An encouraging third on his last couple of starts, GIVE US A SWIG, has been shaping as if this longer trip will bring improvement out of him, so he gets the nod to prevail in a race where the majority arrive out of sorts. Recent Market Rasen winner, The Boat, is a danger if his stamina lasts out, and Eaton Miller is one to monitor in the betting back from 9 months off.

Race Description

This is a three miles handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb. Fergal O’Brien’s TIP TOP CAT has returned an improved model this term and is fancied to defy a career-high mark now he reverts to this longer trip. Fellow hat-trick seeker Time To Tinker rates the obvious threat for the Paul Nicholls yard, although in-form duo Some Detail and Only The Bold warrant plenty of respect too.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
