Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ★★★★★ Selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Ratings Explained The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

Race Description
1
As the title suggests, novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the ranks of the more established horses. This race differs slightly from a standard novice event in that it is restricted to horses that have been specifically bred for National Hunt racing and therefore horses that have previously run on the Flat are barred from taking part. This two miles hurdle race is for four-year-olds and upwards which have not won more than one hurdle race. Br Breeding

There was much to like about the way JAY JAY REILLY did the job in a Kempton novice recently and, with further improvement on the cards, he looks capable of defying a penalty in this company. Gala de Corton had race-fitness and hurdles experience on his side when finishing a place ahead of Earth Company at Wincanton, placings which the latter is taken to reverse here with that run under his belt.

Race Description
This is a three miles novices’ handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 110. Br Breeding

NELSONS ROCK offered more promise on his qualifying run at Wincanton recently and, given he has won a couple of points, there’s every chance an opening mark of 96 underestimates him, so he makes obvious appeal upped markedly in trip with Harry Kimber also taking a useful 7lb off. PLAY SMARTER
Hard to rule out any but GUERNESEY was edged out only in the dying strides by a subsequent winner at Warwick last week and looks the most persuasive option from an unchanged mark (due to go up 4lb). An Tailliur has been on a roll and remains open to improvement following an early unseat at Cheltenham, while Dargiannini retains potential judged on his exploits for Harry Whittington last season.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

With several of these having something to prove, KIERA ROYALE gets the nod to notch a third victory in this sphere having looked back in form when fourth at Ffos Las earlier this month. This step back up in trip will suit and she can strike again. Marilyn Monroe rates the obvious danger if taking her chance (engaged at Hereford on Wednesday), ahead of Duc Kauto.
