Race Description

1

This is a two miles, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. Br Breeding

Look out for the charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery. The charity works nationwide with over 250 schools, and in this its 20th anniversary year will reach around 9,000 young people – at UK racecourses, trainers’ yards and studs. They deliver free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses racing venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving. The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives.

Race Description

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and half a furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than one hurdle races. Br Breeding

PLAY SMARTER

HONNEUR D’AJONC earns the marginal vote ahead of Time To Tinker in what is ultimately likely to boil down to a straight fight, unless dual Flat winner Mahanakhon Power is able to make an immediate impact over hurdles. Time To Tinker is the one to beat on these terms, but this drop back in trip may not be ideal and Honneur d’Ajonc will be better equipped should this turn into a speed test.

Race Description

This is a two miles and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125.

Race Description

This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb. In addition, this race is only available to conditional and amateur jockeys. Br Breeding

PLAY SMARTER

SOUL ICON is a lightly raced, improving sort who had plenty in hand when making all at Exeter recently, so he’s an obvious choice to prevail in a weak event. A return to form would give Voodoo Doll a chance, while King’s Proctor is still relatively unexposed in this discipline, so he’s not completely ruled out.

Race Description

This two miles and half a furlong handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Race Description

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to mares aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles and half a furlong. Br Breeding
