William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse Welcome
Follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook @yorkracecourse 3
A tip for all County Stand Badgeholders is to watch the action from the Dante Suite on the second floor of the Ebor Stand; it has viewing seats as well as a bar, tote, toilets and more seating inside A further tip for all racegoers in the middle of the course do come over to standside and enjoy seeing the horses in the Parade RIng and all that is on offer in the wider stands and lawns.– just cross by the thatched head on box (please leave your picnic in the left luggage facility).
A very warm welcome to YorkMix Family Sunday with its feature race at record prize money of £60,000, the Listed Elevator Company Garrowby Stakes. It is a very special family day for York Racecourse full of racing ponies, thoroughbred racehorses, mechanical racehorses, retired racehorses, meerkats, snakes, tortoises and one very famous pup! I hope you and your family thoroughly enjoy your day. With prize money for the seven thoroughbred races at a record of more than £180,000 we have 81 declared runners vying for the honours. We have some top-class horses and jockeys racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of the YorkMix, our partners and sponsors. We are delighted to welcome locally based leading rider at York, Danny Tudhope, not to mention three riders who were Champion Apprentice earlier in their careers in Cieren Fallon, Tom Marquand and Jason Hart, plus a Grand National winning rider in Graham Lee. The record value of our feature race has been rewarded with an interesting field of top-quality sprinters, all of the contenders have won over the six-furlong trip with a number having done so at York. Perhaps most eye-catching is Gale Force Maya who was successful in the Sky Bet Dash here in July for Darlington trainer, Michael Dods. The yet more local opposition includes Judicial from Julie Camacho’s yard, Lampang for defending champion trainer at York Tim Easterby, Blackrod reperesenting Middleham and Edward Bethell with Ventura Diamond for Malton’s Richard Fahey. Prior to the thoroughbred racing we are proud to host two legs of the Pony Racing Series, sponsored by Dragon Studios. York is delighted to welcome these ponies, young jockeys and their connections to the Knavesmire who knows maybe they will return one day as professional pilots. The Bowen brothers, Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand are among previous graduates. You can bet on the outcome and I hope that you will enjoy the extra sport.
Our last race is contested by Apprentice riders, many from Yorkshire yards, so it is highly appropriate that it forms part of Go Racing in Yorkshire inspired “Future Stars” Series, which culminates in a Final at Doncaster in November Now in its eighth year, coming into round eight and this race, long-time leader, Ryan Sexton remains comfortably in pole position to claim the White Rose Saddlery prize. A victory for Texas Man today would put him in an unassailable position. In terms of the wider attractions, I hope you can find time to visit the Racing Interactive Zone or to see Chase from Paw Patrol, both set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room and its adjacent Lawn. Thankfully weather proofed, there is yet more entertainment based in our entertainment marquee in the middle of the course; Joe’s animal encounters, the jungle slide, are just part of the fun and entirely free For more details of all the extra entertainment today see page 6-7. Racegoers are free to move both sides of the racetrack at the crossing by the thatched head-on box.
A big thank you to all the younger listeners who entered the “Design a racecard cover” competition with YorkMix. Well done to Milly Musgrave age 11 from Bolton Percy on her winning entry! Do visit the YorkMix website later this week to catch up on all the photos from today. Talking of winning entries, as the autumn approaches , the Awards season begins, if you would like a chance to win a VIP Day out and perhaps to register your support for the team here at York, then do take part in the Racing Post Reader Award that forms part of the Racecourse Association Showcase Awards, Your online vote can be cast at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/75NHJKW
I hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of this unique day in our season.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking?
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Wheelchair height betting?
14
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

2. Trained by Henry Candy, I racked up an impressive fourteen wins for connections before retiring in 2020. I amassed over £1.4 million in prize money and among my major wins were today’s feature, The July Cup and the Prix De La Floret. I was sired by Tagula and contested races all over the world including the Breeders Cup. If you’ve guessed me, do you know where I finished on my only start state side?

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE
In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS
There are various points and different ways to bet here at York.
WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T
Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.
1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring.
If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.
The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower.
3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby.
PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
• Fewer than 3 runners all on to win • 3 or 4 runners all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 7 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1,2
WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT Win Only EACH WAY A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• 8 or more runners 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)
STRAIGHT FORECAST Name the first and second in the correct order
At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

How to Read the Racecard bet
Official BHA Ratings
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Vet The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.
Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS
KNAVESMIRE TIP SQUEALER was far from disgraced in Listed territory on his most recent run at this venue last month and given he finished just over four lengths behind the highly progressive Treasure Trove, further improvement should not be ruled out now back to novice level. Silencer is a very experienced sort who is an obvious threat dropping in trip, while Storm Fox boasts an appealing pedigree and would be foolish to discount on her debut. SQUEALER SILENCER

The boys (colts) start with a higher basic weight than the girls (fillies) which is why Dream For Gold has more weight than Talented. Any that had a win already this season would have had to carry additional (so called penalty) weight but all are looking to open their accounts. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!
This afternoon’s John and Judith Marshall Memorial Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with twenty-two closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology.
Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form. Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Another Investment is rated 82 is considered 1lb “better” than Aphelios who is rated 81. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Another Investment should win every time as he is the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field.
1) FORM Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today; Dubai Jewel, Melagyu Kingdom & Bay Breeze.
Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Bay Breeze, Pink Crystal and Azure Blue have all won over today’s disrance
JOHN AND JUDITH MARSHALL MEMORIAL HANDICAP
HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE
6) CONCLUSION Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Going on a hunch that ‘good’ will be the description, the Tim Easterby-trained Bay Breeze might well take advantage of his falling mark on favourable ground. He’s won over the distance before and we all know how much Tim loves to have a York winner!
41
2) THE DRAW Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running straight. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. Perhaps The Dunkirk Lads can use this to his advantage.
4) GROUND If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Fast And Loose is one who will enjoy a quicker surfaces. However Parisiac wins have come on a surface that is a little softer. So make sure to check the weather and the ground description.
Narrowing down the field of fourteen declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is.
3) DISTANCE
A BIG SPRINT HANDICAP?
So in this example Another Investment carries 1lb more than Aphelios, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the fourteen runners but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all seventeen runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance? Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into.
5) YORK RECORD “Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This year we have plenty of horses that have won at the course and distance, Another Investment and The Organiser are the two, to have completed the double.

Now for the first handicap of the day, designed for close competition, the handicapper is an independent assessor who rates horses on their past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

Our richest race today is a part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 300 races in the land. Open to three-year-old horses and older, the competitive edge is sharpened by the nuance that horses who have won this season in the top two divisions are excluded. Horses of the same age and sex start with the same weight, you can see that difference between an older male contender such as Blackrod and a female opponent of the same age like Ventura Diamond. Any three-year-old runners start with a lower weight however the sole representative of what is termed the classic generation (i.e. aged 3), Ebro River, actually has the top weight as he carries an additional burden for winning a Listed race at Chester. Baby-Changing facilities are available in a purpose-built facility on the ground floors of both Knavesmire & Ebor stands, as well as near the Parent and Toddler Room and a signed area in the Course Enclosure close to the turnstiles. There is a wide range of many food and drink options for families and children. From fish ‘n’ chips and hot dogs at our Good Food to Go outlets in Grandstand & Paddock to an extensive sandwich selection and lasagne and chips in the County Stand at Eat Between Our Races. We welcome children in our main restaurants, and in the Gimcrack Restaurant we offer a half price option for under 12s covering both lunch and afternoon tea. Wherever you can buy food we also can provide juice for children, with water available from all the bars. Our Parent and Toddler room, situated opposite the main Ebor Stand entrance in the Library Rooms, allows parents and children in the Stands SIde some quiet time away from the hurly burly of the main raceday atmosphere. A microwave is provided for parents to warm children’s bottles and televisions provide coverage of racing whilst another shows cartoons. Some comfy chairs should help recharge the batteries. A baby changing facility has been added next door to this room. This facility has been generously supported by our local Tesco at Askam Bar.

RACE DESCRIPTION Getting the hang of handicaps? Your vital statistics are; 3yo+, rated up to 80, going two miles. A race for the established stayers, watch them come past the stands twice as they race over the longest distance of the day, completing a circuit of the Knavesmire. Remember, the best will be the highest rated and so will carry more weight, so Dance To Paris will not be quite as light on his feet as top weight today.

RACE DESCRIPTION Another ticklish handicap to solve, your key factors are it is for 3yo+ horses over a mile and a quarter
The opposite way around to golf, the best on past performance, will be the highest number, so First Impression will carry most weight. Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; see how The Flying Ginger qualifies on both counts.

RACE IS KINDLY SPONSORED BY THE CONNECTIONS OF THREE-TIME YORK WINNER FIRMAMENT. Owned by Gallop Racing, Firmament was sent to Jeremy Noseda back in 2014, he raced three times as a two-year-old registering one success at Newbury. After that first season, not many would have thought he would rack up an eventual 89 career starts, which earnt him a cool £329,173 in prize money. In 2015 he changed hands and was sent to Yorkshire based David O’Meara, with whom most associate the son of Cape Cross with. The two would combine to register a further six career wins, including three at York which are listed below. HIs biggest day in the sun came in 2016 where he won the Clipper Logistics Stakes at the Ebor Festival. Danny Tudhope has ridden him on so many occasions that it was only right that the pair linked up to win over £50,000. Firmament was retired in March of this year after an illustrious career. He’s been a fantastic servant to connections and will no doubt enjoy a well earned retirement.

A final handicap, the shortest distance in British racing of only five furlongs usually makes for a tight finish. The key consideration here is the rider, as all of them are still apprentices. Connections can gain relief on the weight allocated to their horse, stepped according to the record of the rider So, you need to decide who has got it right, the owners of Lullaby Bay when choosing the more experienced Harry Davies; or those of Silky Wilkie who think the benefit of the 7lb reduction afforded to the less previously successful Sam Fielden will see the partnership home in front Could be time for a pin or your favourite colour However you finish the day as winner or unlucky loser, do come back and try to win at the October Finale.
