HORSE WELFARE
“Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider”. Like most sports racing carries risks, however, we work to make sure that no death or injury occurs, which could have been prevented. Here at Stratford Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have two specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action There is also a British Horseracing Authority Vet in attendance. During the race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy Please do not assume the worst.

HOW TO BET WITH A BOOKMAKER
1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager.
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, name the horse, (the bookmaker won’t necessarily know it’s number). Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie for a win or a place
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g. £1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.
EACH WAY BETTING
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting
• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win
• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Deryck Baker
The family of Deryck Baker are honoured to sponsor a race in the memory of a much-loved and much missed husband (of more than 65 years), brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather
Deryck passed away in April 2025, aged 86, after a long battle with prostate cancer Deryck loved horse racing and followed the sport throughout his life. In his early years, this passion was honed at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club – a racecourse that was a vestige of the British Raj and that is still thriving today. A modest and [sometimes] shrewd punter, he loved his small wagers every Saturday. He led his oldest son – then a wee boy - astray by encouraging his interest and placing bets of sixpence (it was pre-1971) each way on his behalf. An early long odds win meant Brad was hooked on racing for life - with false expectations forever created on the ease of picking winners.
Deryck was a talented hockey player and later referee and organiser of the Swindon Indoor League but, on retiring from that sport, racing became a major passion with frequent visits to racecourses – especially Newbury, Ascot, Cheltenham and Stratford. He also enjoyed the odd outing to the now sadly closed down Swindon dog track. Deryck loved the atmosphere of the old-fashioned bookie shops, especially from the old days of board men and the Tannoy, and he only moved to an online betting account during the pandemic, with racing just about the first sport to return from lockdown. In his working life, Deryck was a legend in the motor trade and worked for several years in Stratford – commuting daily from his home in Swindon. He particularly loved jump racing. With the support of the lovely team at Stratford racecourse, the family know this is the right place to remember Deryck with his own race. He would be typically both amused and bemused to see his name on the racecard and in the Racing Post.

‘Donegal’
4-year-old Bay Gelding
Dam: Desire To Win
Sire: Dariyan
Donegal arrived at Charlie Longsdon Racing in October, we brought him from the ‘Tattersalls October Autumn HIT Sale 2025’. He had been previously racing on the flat in France. The first time we watched Donegal jump we knew he had plenty of potential, he has lots of scope and speed about him. He first ran at Doncaster in a Juvenile Hurdle back in December 2025 and finished 2nd only beaten a neck, he put a fantastic performance in for his first run over hurdles and showed plenty of promise. He then ran at Hereford where the ground soon declared ‘Heavy’ after we ran and it proved to be too heavy for us. We have since given him a short break while the ground was bottomless and are now set to run in the next couple of weeks. He is going to be a fantastic horse to have plenty of fun with during the Spring and Summer months! He has a lovely character and is full of personality, his favourite things are jumping, spending some time in the field with his friends & treats!

8-year-old Bay Gelding
Dam: Theola
Sire: Vadamos
Bowmore has been with us since February 2025 and has been under Stratford Racecourse Ownership since June 2025, and what a horse he has been! He had his first run of the season at Market Rasen in October 2025 where he finished 2nd beaten by only a length. He quickly followed this up in November with a win at Newbury! Since winning at Newbury, he has run in the most exciting races at both Cheltenham and Aintree Festival. He is as honest as they come and always puts his heart into his work, he has given Stratford Members an incredible season of attending all the big meetings and being competitive. He thrives off the better ground so he will run 1 or 2 more times during the Spring months before enjoying a summer holiday!

‘Unnamed’ 4-year-old Bay Gelding
Dam: Delta Forty
Sire: Maxios
The ‘Maxios x’ youngster was brought by Charlie at the GOFFS IRE Arkle Sale in June 2025. He is an exciting prospect with impeccable breeding, he is out of established sire Maxios and out of Delta Forty, they have both proven lots of stamina and it’s the ideal blend for success over jumps. Since arriving with us as a 3-year-old he has always done everything right, he has already shown bags of scope in his early career and has taken to all his work nicely. He has been given the time to mature and grow as since he arrived, he hasn’t stopped growing! We plan to give him a Summer Holiday and will aim to run him at the beginning Autumn in season 26/27 where he will start in bumpers before working his way to hurdles. He will be a fantastic horse for Stratford Members as he will take everyone on the journey from start to finish even including the naming process as this will be decided by his owners!
