Welcome to Ladies Day 2023. Today is one of the highlights of our season and we are delighted to welcome so many well dressed ladies and gentleman here to enjoy the afternoons racing.

Together with 6 action packed horse races we will once again have free to use children’s activities based within the centre course enclosure. If you have purchased a main enclosure ticket you are also welcome to use the centre course

We also have 3 competitions taking place during the afternoon. These include; Best Dressed Lady sponsored by Ardencote Spa, Best Hat sponsored by Hirons Hat and Best Dressed Couple sponsored by Grace & Dotty. The competition will be open from 11am with spotters walking around the enclosures Three finalists for each category will be selected and will be asked to come to the parade ring after the 3rd race whereby the results will be announced.

We are sorry that the road works continue to delay your journey in and out of the course The timing and works are out of our control and with all traffic leaving onto the same main road it creates congestion We are trying to manage this but until the works are completed management is difficult. We thank you for your patience.

We are here to provide you with a good day out If you have suggestions, complaints, questions or comments, please contact us at the office via email; info@stratfordracecourse.net or telephone 01789 267949

HORSE WELFARE

“Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider”. Like most sports racing carries risks, however, we work to make sure that no death or injury occurs, which could have been prevented. Here at Stratford Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have two specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action There is also a British Horseracing Authority Vet in attendance. During the race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy Please do not assume the worst.

HOW TO BET WITH A BOOKMAKER

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, name the horse, (the bookmaker won’t necessarily know it’s number). Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet

3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes. e.g. £1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

•Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

•3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

•5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

•8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

•Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

•Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

•Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

Allan Atkinson (Al)

Al was agiant of aman. He wasn’t seven feet tall or anything but when the sad and untimely task of organising his funeral fell to myself and one of his closest friends Alan Turner, weweredeluged with condolences and genuine offers of help by ahuge number of people whose lives Al had influenced and enriched and when the funeral was done, we knewtherehad to be more to remember him.

He had been abookmaker earlier in his life and was amassiveracing fan and when Alan suggested sponsoring arace in his honour, Iinstinctively knewhewas right. It says something of the man that our problem when filling acoach to travel from Kidderminster for today was working out who not to invite in order to keep numbers manageable.

Al was aminor celebrity in Kidderminster. After bookmaking, he had runasnooker club (with Alan in his later years) and he was one of those people who truly was known by everyone in town. Notonly that but he was extremely popular too and awordthat cropped up time and again after we lost him was “gentleman”.

He was kind, generous, knowledgeable and sociable and he would haverelished watching aHurdle race, so this seems awonderfully fitting way to remember him. Ourgroup will cheer the winner home this afternoon and enjoyagreat day to celebrate the man after whom this race is named.

Ihope he’s found avantage point to watch it from too.
