The Millennium Green Trustees will welcome volunteer support on

Saturda, 2ndChurch April,to0commemorate 2a Sponsor the illumination of Silsoe that Special Anniversary, Birthday, Remembering toa Loved one, Birth of a Baby, maybe Exam, or Recovery from Illness. GIVEpassing THEan GREEN A SPRING CLEAN St James would be illuminated for a week for a donation to : Jobs will involve litter picking, pruning, weeding paths, removing ivy from Friends of Silsoe Church hedgerow trees, cleaning seats, etc.

CLOPHILL  DISTRICT FLOWER CLB Our March demonstrator was Lesley Sturdy from Luton. Lesley is not only a long-standing Club member but also a NAFAS Area Demonstrator, teacher, trainer of flower arranging udges and a national and international flower arranging udge. Lesley and her husband had a three month world trip when they retired, and all the above interests and travels were illustrated in her demonstration entitled Around the World.

Her first demonstration was a seascape to illustrate her trips to the South Seas and the Caribbean, where she was called upon to udge the flowering arranging World Show at very short notice. She also talked about the wonderful gardens, plants and flowers she had seen in both these areas.

Next we were off to New ealand for a white arrangement of roses and carnations, which looked like a glacier sliding down a large piece of driftwood. A long horiontal arrangement was added above  New ealand being known as the land of the long white cloud.

Palm leaves and orchids brought us to Singapore. Then we were off to India, which she first visited to train flower arranging udges before the World Show held there in 2020. This was a vibrant arrangement of orange mini gerbera, red roses and purple lisianthus. She remarked on the wonderful hospitality and generosity she had received during several visits to India. She then talked about her many family holidays in France, while arranging a spiral of yellow roses with manipulated aspidistra leaves and gypsophila.

Her final arrangement reflected her love of period flower arranging and design. She used a vase that had belonged to the great flower arranger, Constance Spry, as part of a design from the end of the Victorian era.

During the demonstration Lesley told us that it was her last demonstration to our Club as she is shortly retiring from demonstrating.

She has been a maor part of the flower arranging world for many years and will be missed by all. We wish her a long and happy retirement, and look forward to seeing her as a member of the audience at our Club.

Our next demonstration is on 7th April by Barbara Collins, and on 5th May we have National Demonstrator, Tony Brown, For the Love of Flowers.

Spd atch In the past few weeks the team have been concentrating on undertaking sessions during the morning period, when many people feel that the traffic speeds are excessive for the village.

The last session was conducted during an afternoon near to the unction with Ampthill Road and Newbury Lane, with cars entering the village. As expected, the number of vehicles passing in the hour was 78 less than in the morning. However, the attitude to speeding was very different. Just under 20 of all vehicles passing were exceeding the speed limit, and the average speed of these vehicles was 40 mph. Not only that, but half of all those vehicles were actually travelling at 40 mph or more. These results again indicate that there is essentially a total disregard for speed limits in the village, and as an educational programme there is still much to do to get vehicles and their drivers to adhere to the speed limits.

This is being written during the third week of the Russian invasion of kraine, and internationally Rotary is starting to action its planned response to the fast-moving humanitarian crisis. Significant funding is being made available to Rotary Districts in the neighbouring East European countries to help manage the refugee crisis. The Club will also be making a generous donation to a national appeal, with Club members also actively involved with the local initiatives to collect, sort and pack humanitarian supplies for sending to the Poland and Hungary borders with kraine. Sadly, support is likely to be needed for some time to come.

Club Members enoyed two particularly interesting and diverse talks in February: Firstly, Richard Sharp gave an illustrated talk about the construction of the Settle to Carlisle Railway. The main line is 73 miles long line and crosses the remote scenic regions of the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines. The line has several notable bridges and tunnels including the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct. Work was started by the Midland Railway Company in 1869 and the line took seven years to build. Some 6,000 navvies were involved in its construction. Richard gave us an excellent overview of the business and political rivalries that created the line, the impact of the adverse geographical conditions, and the human cost of the build.

Secondly, Trevor Hughes spoke about his voluntary work for the Witness Service run by Citiens Advice at Luton Crown Court. Trevor is actively involved in guiding and advising witnesses, and spoke movingly about the practical and emotional challenges of giving evidence at a Crown Court Trial.

The Service is confidential, impartial and totally independent from the Police and the Courts.

IMPORTANT GIDANCE FOR CONTRIBTORS TO SILSOE NEWS As communities recover from the implications of Covid-19 there has been a resurgence in contributions to Silsoe News. Many contributors may not have submitted copy before, whilst others may have done so but forgotten the guidelines. To assist all contributors to achieve the best presentation for their contributions in the magaine, please note the following guidelines.

Adhering to these guidelines will ensure that the magaine continues to be available at the beginning of each month in an interesting and readable format.

Deadline for contributions: This is normally 15th of the preceding month except the deadline for the January issue, which is 10th December. Contributions received after this date will not be included in the magaine.

Acceptable forats: The magaine uses Microsoft Publisher to prepare all contributions for submission to the printers. Word can also be used for contributions but other formats, including pdf, or software that is not compatible with Microsoft Office are not acceptable.

Length of contributions and font sie: The page format for the magaine is A5 and text contributions should be a maximum of one page. All text should be easily readable, and as a guide a full page of text using Arial 10pt is approximately 400 words, and using Times New Roman 10pt it is approximately 450 words. These are the preferred fonts and formats but others can be used if they adhere to these guidelines.

Laout and colour: The magaine is produced in black and white so the use of colours in contributions is strongly discouraged. In particular purple and pale pastel colours should not be used. Please avoid running text over a picture background.

It is very important that the contribution is in a format that can be included directly, without the need for editorial changescorrections after submission, which can be very time consuming and delay the production of the magaine.

Any queries or concerns about format or layout can be discussed with the editor prior to final submission, as this will minimise the effort required to achieve a final, acceptable format.
