1. FORM

EXPERT VIEW

A quick way to see a horse’s past performance. These are its recent finishing positions.

How the experts rate the horse’s chances:

Look out for Letters: C D CD BF

= Has won at this course = Has won over this distance = Has won over this distance at this course = Was a beaten favourite

MORE INFORMATION ON THE FORM / P F U R CO B S r

= New racing season = Missed racing season = Was pulled-up and didn’t finish the race = Horse fell = Rider unseated = Horse refused to race = The horse was forced out of a race by a loose horse = Horse was brought down = Horse slipped = The horse ran around a jump or took the wrong course in a flat race = Disqualified

d Bold form figures = performance in all-weather (Flat) or Point-to-Point (Jump) races

2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse. 3. Timeform view and TFR rating 4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION

Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race. 5. JOCKEYS Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day. OTHER USEFUL DETAILS 6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey 7. Saddlecloth number 8. Horse’s name 9. Days since the horse last run 10. Horse’s age 11. Jockey’s weight (stone and lbs) 12. Sponsor (if applicable)

BETTING EXPLAINED Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

WHAT’S THE PLAN has taken his form up a level in defeat this season and James Fanshawe’s 3-y-o looks ready to add to his tally. He gets the vote over Warning Sign, who landed back-to-back course wins here last summer (including this race) and arrives on the back of a career-best having bolted up at Goodwood 8 weeks ago. HWFA WILLIAMS FOUNDER OF SANDOWN PARK This race is named in honour of Hwfa Williams, who founded Sandown Park Racecourse in 1875 and created the Eclipse Stakes in 1886. Hwfa was Chairman of the Board of Directors and Clerk of the Course at Sandown Park for nearly 50 years. Eton-educated, in 1914 he was shot and badly wounded in an incident in Pall Mall. His wife was a notable society heiress and known at the time as the best-dressed woman in England. He died in 1926 aged 76. A biography of Hwfa Williams by Jehu Junior records the following: “For when some seventeen years ago a band of gentlemen interested themselves in the provision of the race course to be conducted on superiour (sic) lines near London, and found it in Sandown Park they also found in him a manager after the sportsman’s own heart, who there invented that system of gate money racing under ‘Club’ auspices which has since been so generally adopted. He has surmounted many difficulties, well established his own reputation, and raised Sandown Park to, and maintained it in, the position of the best managed race course in a country in all part of which its methods have been imitated.”
